Backpacking Manistee River Trail

Well I have always wanted to do this trail... So here it is! We will camp at the Tippydam campground Friday.. Get up early Saturday and park at Red bridge... We will take the North country trail (over 10 miles) to the Seaton Creek campground where we will stay Saturday night... Sunday we will backpack the Manistee river trail to Red bridge again... Water is available at both campsites but I recommend that we carry at least 1 pump per 5 people for water stops during the day... There are fire rings at both campgrounds... The cost to reserve sites is $20, Seaton creek is 14 per site... So that would 7 a person for the weekend... So campfire cooking is available... Plan for rain/hope for sun... COME prepared... I will post a supply list soon... Bring your swimsuit! If you want to share a tent or need a tent to share, please post in the comments section... Um outdoor adventures and REI lend gear... This is supposed to be some of the best views in Michigan! We will have a pre-meeting per request... I can't wait....

It was a tough hike but everyone did great! It was more scenic than I expected for Michigan, felt like I was out west somewhere.

I wanted to go swimming... my hammock was so comfortable I couldn't move. I'd better leave that behind next time ;-)

Here's a couple GPS and elevation maps of my previous two day Manistee trip, courtesy of Steve from MAC. We started from the Red Bridge site:

I'm assuming that the plan we're aiming for is to arrive at Friday, start Saturday, and leave Monday, with an early exit route for those who want to leave Sunday. Referencing Calyn's map, it'd probably be best if we start early to reach campsite 1 or 2 asap on the first day. One second day, I personally would like to camp at site number 4 if possible. There's an early exit by camp 9 so if everyone who's leaving early parks there then gets a ride back to the starting point it should be good.

I have a 2 person tent that I'm willing to share (will be cozy, not comfortable). I also have a liquid fuel stove that should last longer on fuel than a canister one, so I'm thinking that me and Dylan with his Coleman should be among the ones carrying the stoves. I also have a water bottle filter that's really lightweight and can filter a huge volume of water at a time, so I'm willing to bring that as well.

First, I'd like to apologize for getting to everyone last minute like this. Yeah Jim, I could probably make it to AA around 3-5. Was thinking about meeting at the REI there, always wanted to visit that place. I'll call you when I'm about ready to leave, k?

I can go any time. If it's ok with John and Sam, I'll head up to ride with Jim in the morning.

I sort of wanted to leave before noon, Dylan did you still want to head up morning? Maybe John & Sam can leave in the afternoon? What do you guys think? I will wait until later if you want.

@Jim & John. What time are you guys planning to leave? I have to go to work and finish some pending work before I can leave. Looking to leave between 3-5pm. I will be bringing a water filter.

Trail maps online are kinda crummy, here is the best I could find... I do not have access to a printer at home, if someone could print it out, please do so... http://www.michigantrailmaps.co...

I know John is in favor of group cooking... Gear sharing: I have a heavy water filter, light stove, and small cooking set... We likely do not need more than 2-3 cooking stoves and 2 water filters... I will bring my stove because it is ultra light... If someone has a light weight tarp, please bring it... Food bags: I have 1 with a hole that is easy to fix... We probably will not need more than 2-3 large bags... I have a long rope... YOU must come with a backpack...

Hi Caryn, I think 50/50 would be better but 3 mile isn’t going to break me. Either way on the cooking.

John, do you still need a ride Friday afternoon?

Dylan, I could drive but I’m just not sure if John needs a ride, the last time we talk he did. So if he does, we could all head up in the afternoon I think it’s about a 3hr drive or so.

  • Dylan C.

I'd like to carpool with someone from around Tecumseh, Jackson or Ann Arbor (could go up to Brighton). Leave Friday morning and need to come back on Sunday. Get 50 bucks if you drive. I can do 10 or 13 miles, preferably the first day, haven't looked at the map.

  • Caryn ;.

Do we want to all cook together or cook in small groups?

    June 18, 2012

  • Caryn ;.

Talked to park rangers today... Tent spots are first come/first serve... So I need everyone to tell me, how you want to do this... We can do 10 and 8 or 13 and 5... And do you want the longer portion on the first day or the second day...

    June 18, 2012

  • Jim G.

If anyone wants to car pool for Brighton or along US23 north to I75. I will be leaving Friday afternoon and returning either Sunday night or Monday afternoon, I’m flexible I don’t have to be to work until Tuesday. [masked]
