Replacing facebook group for backpacking

Please join if you're interested in hiking, camping and backpacking with local meetup groups:

Because there was a lot of duplicate posts, and several local meetup groups doing the same backpacking events, we're going to abandon the old facebook groups (MAC Backpackers and AAAC Backpackers) in favor of this new combined group.

The purpose of this discussion group is to promote backpacking on meetup. All are welcome, whether you are just getting started or you have backpacked for decades. We're creating this on fb because no one uses the forums on meetup and it can be hard to find backpacking related events mixed with all the other stuff.

Backpacking is hiking in the wilderness with camping gear and food on your back. I wanted to try this for many years but didn't know how to get started until I joined meetup. I had many questions. Some of them were:
Can I fit all my camping gear in a pack, along with food and water?
How much would the pack weigh and how far could I hike with it?
What equipment do I need to get started?

Most questions are best answered by getting out on the trail with other backpackers. A couple years ago, one of the meetup organizers helped answer my questions with a series of practice events, followed by a 42-mile hike along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Now I'm hooked. I hope we can answer your questions too!

This group is a good place to:
Brainstorm for new backpacking adventures.
Post your backpacking photos.
Share info on low-cost backpacking gear.
Get advice on how to plan a group event.
Find out who wants to do a practice event.
Promote your already-posted meetup event.
Work out details of gear sharing and carpooling for the next trip.
Ask questions about back-country cooking, lightweight tents, backpack fitting, footwear, needed fitness level or whatever else.

Also, we could use a few hikers tomorrow:
