January Game of the Month: Dresden Files RPG

Ankthem's Scepter

September 28th, 1999, the leader of the 7th Day Church of Tremulus, Pastor Ankthem Smith, commanded his flock to commit suicide rather than be taken into federal custody.  After they were all dead, Ankthem set the house ablaze with himself in it.  Recovery of the bodies took several weeks but all were accounted for, including Pastor Smith.  His remains were missing his fourth finger (the ring finger) of his left hand.  The finger was found within what appeared to be a relic of some kind that was recovered from the ruins of the Church House.  The finger and its container were somehow misplaced while being transported to the police evidence locker located in Twin Falls.

Ankthem’s Scepter has been talked about frequently in several circles of the supernatural community.  Despite no one really knowing what to use it for, the relic seems to have a lot of bad luck hanging around it.  Periodically over the last 10 years the Scepter has reappeared to the gleeful delight of some dark practitioner only to disappear amidst pain and bloodshed.  No one really knows what the Scepter looks like (even the police photograph that showed it in the background vanished) but all agree it holds great power.  That power has come to Seattle.  A buyer has surfaced.  But all is not going according to plan.

Does it ever?

Loved it! Wife and I had a blast. Prior schedule though prevents us from attending Feb. meeting. No reflection on you boss :)

I am really glad at all the individual moments that I can remember about your characters. For having ten folks at the table it is pretty impressive you made them all come alive so! Good job right back at you all!

I am positively amazed at the turnout, folks! Thanks again! Though I was sweating bullets with how this would work with so many people I had a great time putting it on for you all! I hope I did an okay job showcasing Fate (it is near and dear to my heart these days!). The one thing that really can only be truly explained by playing is the importance of Maneuvers. Something to keep in mind if we ever do it again. Though I would never have a group that big for any game that I ran on a regular basis I appreciate you all being patient with the flipping! Thanks again and looking forward to the next one!

Hi u guys. I just found this meetup. Sry so late. If you dont have a character for me tomorrow I will understand and just watch or play npc's. I love D&D and RPG's and Dresden Files is my favorite series bar none.

Hey all! Got 1/2 of the characters done (I work best under pressure!). Thought I would share!
    1) Veronica Hart, a White Court Vampire. She loves to pretend she's a child but really she is a shark. She has found that sharks are a LOT more scary when they have pigtails.
    2) The Giggling Man, a murder spirit from the Nevernever. You will never see him coming. But you will hear the giggle. He kills his victims with a pair of oversized scissors.
    3) Margo Rahnasto, an ex-cultist who is now a full blown sorcerer. Having once been dominated completely by another, she is extremely paranoid about falling under the control of anyone. Despite a very dangerous reputation in the supernatural community most people don't know she is also a single mom.
    4) Prick Johnson, a self-styled hero amongst the wee folk. Though small, he has taken down some very large creatures. Just don't make fun of his name. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

    • Nicholas H.

What is your idea? I can try my best!

      January 23, 2014

    • Nina B.

I was going to be a female wee fea who goes by Zhina (true name much longer and obviously secret). She became alienated from her fellow fea because she spent a lot of time with a human girl who eventually grew up and died. She protected her from various threats from mundane to mystical. Now she is basically a free agent in search of pizza and a hero's reputation, despite her small size.

I want to check this out, but apparently I caught the flu so I should probably stay away. If I'm feeling better I may make an appearance an observe. Looks like a rather large group already. If I don't show it's because I'm still feeling crappy.

    January 23, 2014

    • Nicholas H.

You are welcome to watch! Usually with a group this big there are some folks who don't show. I am looking forward to it!

      January 23, 2014

  • Cinnamon W.

    Awesome! I cant wait!

    January 22, 2014

  • Nina B.

I've read the Fate primer but there's no indication of character creation- how does that work in this system?

    January 20, 2014

    • Nina B.

The special dice used in the system. According to the primer at least

      January 22, 2014

    • Nicholas H.

Ahh! Yes. I do have Fate dice. I'm not sure I have 10 sets of them but should have enough to keep things moving along.

      January 22, 2014

  • Nicholas H.

    5) William Hicks, a Wizard from Texas. A rancher by trade, he has used his talents to uphold the law. Almost a decade ago he had a fight up in the Appalachian Mountains. When he came back down he was dying of cancer. He doesn't talk about it.

Ok Think I RSVP correctly, we are a go. Wife knows more about Dresden than I do...so I will cower behind her :)

    January 21, 2014

    • Nicholas H.

You are golden! Thanks for joining us!

      January 21, 2014

  • Nicholas H.

Hey all! I just wanted to give you all a heads up that my original idea for the game has changed considering we have a fair crowd (potentially) showing up! The story is going to be split up into two very simple threads with approximately one half of the group going down one and the other group going down the other. While this does mean a little more time on the sidelines I will do my absolute best to make sure it is fun for all!

    January 21, 2014

  • Nicholas H.

I think I am going to cap players at 10, or two groups of 5. Priority is on people arriving first, and those with RSVPs getting first shot from there. I was thinking 12 but that's just getting bugnuts crazy, especially with a game everyone is not quite familiar with. If there is such strong demand there might be an encore!

    January 20, 2014

  • Nicholas H.

Kenneth, if you and your wife are interested in coming I am down with it. It is looking like we might have around 10+ people showing. This will require a modification of the story I was going to tell. I am going to generate a parallel storyline and run it like there are 2 smaller groups. It is an interesting idea! And challenging! I would like to give it a try! If you are coming please rsvp!

Probably too late, but still room for wife and I?

    January 20, 2014

  • Erfunden

My wife has never played an rpg before but she likes the Dresden Files so I'm trying to talk her into this. I can't RSVP yet.

    December 17, 2013

    • Nicholas H.

Let us know! DFRPG fills up fast which is why I put it in January to shake off the winter cobwebs!

      December 17, 2013

    • Erfunden

Ha ha! I was just coming to say that, while my wife finally agreed, we had something come up that weekend. But you changed the date! Perfect!
Is there still a couple of seats? We'd love to come!

      January 6, 2014

  • Nathan H.

The 25th conflicts with an SQL Pass event I've signed up for.

    January 6, 2014

  • Nicholas H.

Sorry about the date change! Work schedule shifted a bit and I will have to push it a week!

    January 5, 2014

  • Nina B.

Is being one of the wee folk an option?

    January 5, 2014

  • Nicholas H.

Hey all! Just dropped some resources for Fate on the Files section (found under the "More" Button at the top of the page). I would encourage you all to look over them if needed!

    December 28, 2013

  • Nina B.

This sounds awesome! I'm a somewhat experienced D&D (3.5) player and a fan of our friend Dresden but I don't know this system or how to make a character for it. I'd like to sign up for this so resources would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey all! There are some rules concerning the use of magic in the Dresden Files:
    1) Never Take a Human Life with Magic
    2) Never Transform another.
    3) Never Invade the thoughts of another.
    4) Never enthrall another (enslave)
    5) Never reach beyond the borders of Life
    6) Never swim against the currents of time.
    7) Never seek knowledge or power from beyond the outer gates (entreating the Elder Gods and such). Taking a life with magic or invading someone else's mind does very horrible things both to them and to you. Using black magic eventually leads you down the very dark path to ruin. If you violate these laws the regulatory body of magic, The Wardens, come and slice off your head. They are, like most bureaucrats, rather unforgiving and tend to take a zero tolerance stance against these transgressions. Looking forward to it!

Excellent! Good to have you along! We did this game last year and it was a blast. Really. We wrecked a LOT of stuff. I have a really cool idea for a story this time. Since you are the first, I assume you would like to play a wizard?

    December 8, 2013

    • NickRobinson

A wizard would be nice or maybe a white court vampire

      December 20, 2013

  • Andrew F.

Thanks for running this, Nick! Glad to have a chance to try it.

    December 10, 2013

  • NickRobinson

Avid follower of the only professional Wizard in Chicago and would like the chance to play this game.
