I've been wanting to try this hike for a while, but have not had a chance to make it out there yet, since it's 2 hours away from DC. It's supposed to be one of the best ones in the area. It seems to have a little bit of everything, lots of streams, gorgeous views and nice wooded trails. Because of the distance, it's definitely a hard hike. You should have previous experience hiking and walk your dog longer distances on a regular basis. It will have some hard ascents, and muddy/rocky trails. Good hiking boots are strongly recommended. There are also stream crossings, so be prepared. Your dog will be wet and muddy, but definitely happy.
Find more hike details and reviews go here: http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/WhiteRocks/. I have not done this hike before, so it will be an adventure for all of us :)
This is an optional off-leash hike, so please be aware of the policy on Off Leash Dog Activities. You will need to have your leash with you at all times and your dog under voice control. This is a pretty remote hike, so we shouldn't run into too many people.
This hike should take about 5 hours including a half hour break for lunch at the lookout. We will meet at the parking area and be ready to hike at 10am. A note on google directions from a previous hiker's comments:
Most directions tell you to turn off of WV Highway 55 onto Waites Run, but this sign doesn't say Waites Run there. This is right near where 55 comes into 259. Rather, look for the 5 over 1 sign (a circle with a 5 on the top half of the circle and a 1 on the bottom half). This is for County Hwy 5/1. Otherwise, the google directions were simple enough.
If there's interest, we can carpool and/or meet somewhere when we get off the highway and caravan from there.
I am not planning on camping Saturday night, but feel free to organize if there are some of you who would like to.
Looking forward to seeing you all there!
