Strenuous 9.5 Mile circuit Hike in WV - White Rocks Hike

I've been wanting to try this hike for a while, but have not had a chance to make it out there yet, since it's 2 hours away from DC.  It's supposed to be one of the best ones in the area.  It seems to have a little bit of everything, lots of streams, gorgeous views and nice wooded trails.  Because of the distance, it's definitely a hard hike.  You should have previous experience hiking and walk your dog longer distances on a regular basis.  It will have some hard ascents, and muddy/rocky trails.  Good hiking boots are strongly recommended. There are also stream crossings, so be prepared.  Your dog will be wet and muddy, but definitely happy.

Find more hike details and reviews go here: http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/WhiteRocks/.  I have not done this hike before, so it will be an adventure for all of us :)

This is an optional off-leash hike, so please be aware of the policy on Off Leash Dog Activities.  You will need to have your leash with you at all times and your dog under voice control.  This is a pretty remote hike, so we shouldn't run into too many people.

This hike should take about 5 hours including a half hour break for lunch at the lookout. We will meet at the parking area and be ready to hike at 10am.   A note on google directions from a previous hiker's comments:

Most directions tell you to turn off of WV Highway 55 onto Waites Run, but this sign doesn't say Waites Run there.   This is right near where 55 comes into 259.  Rather, look for the 5 over 1 sign (a circle with a 5 on the top half of the circle and a 1 on the bottom half).  This is for County Hwy 5/1.  Otherwise, the google directions were simple enough.

If there's interest, we can carpool and/or meet somewhere when we get off the highway and caravan from there.

I am not planning on camping Saturday night, but feel free to organize if there are some of you who would like to.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

I am meeting a member between 9 and 9:15 at the exit off from I-81 - exit 296 for US-48/VA-55 toward Strasburg. Looks like there is a small area on the right side of the road on 55 across from Red Bud Rd. There is enough room for a few cars. Anyone who wants to meet there and drive together to the trail head feel free. We will leave there at 9:15am sharp. See you tomorrow!

I think Steve and I will try to meet you there. :)

I think I'll carpool with Gina but have room for one more person (maaaybe two), depending on the size of the dog(s), if she and I take my car. I'll be coming from Alexandria.

Jen - Where are you? I'm in Fairfax, off Rt 50.

Hi, Steve! I'm in Old Town. So, I think you're sort of on my way, right?

Hi everyone. Looks like it will be a nice day for the hike. It will probably be in the 30s when we start out, but should be getting up around 50 by midday. If anyone wants to carpool, you can coordinate here. I will be stopping at the Starbucks right off exit 6 Front Royal around 9:15 if anyone wants to caravan from there. I will send out an email tomorrow with my contact number. There will be no phone reception as we get near the hike, so make sure you have a hard copy of directions. See you all on Saturday!

I'd love to car pool. If you're coming out 66, I'm right off the 495 exit, about 1 mile down Rt. 50. I'll have me and my 65 lb Lab mix.

I don't have room in my car, but it sounds like Jen has room.

Hello all! I'm on the waitlist but would love to carpool if I'm able to attend. I live in Alexandria and have a subaru station wagon (i.e. can take multiple people dogs). Or, I'd be happy to ride along with someone else with my pup (he's 90lbs though so he requires some space). Thanks!

I am sorry I won't be able to go, I have a small family emergency I have to take care of... have a great time, and bummed that I can't go

would anyone else like to carpool? I'm leaving from near Georgetown in DC. I can take a person/dog pair along with me and my two friendly dogs Max and Pierre. My car is very dog friendly.

Hi Gina, I moved the hike to March 30th because of rain. If you can still go, I'm up for carpooling. Just let me know.

Hi Gina, I just wanted to let you know I'm bringing a plus 1 now, so I'm no longer able to carpool. I'm sure you could find someone else. See you Saturday!

i'd love to do this hike if someone has room for me in a carpool - would like to take the dog but could leave her for space purposes!

    March 17, 2013

    • Sarah

Hi April, I'm sure that people would be willing to carpool. So far Steve, Gina, and I are willing to carpool. I'm sure that between us we could coordinate space for you and your dog. My dog is non-dominant and gets along well with pretty much everyone.

thanks, sarah! i think i am going to sit this one out - alternate plans and also concerned the distance might be too much for my 10-year-old pup. hope to join you guys again soon!

    Hi everyone,

I've been keeping an eye on the weather, and the chance of rain keeps increasing. It's now 80% and supposed to rain the whole day. I'm just going to go ahead and move the hike to Saturday March 30th instead. All the details will stay the same. If you can still go, no need to change your "Yes" RSVP. If you had changed the RSVP to "No", but can now attend, please email me and I will change the RSVP back to "Yes" for you. I will not open the hike to new RSVPs until Sunday. That should give everyone a chance to get back on the list. Looking forward to seeing you in a couple weeks!

Anyone interested in car-pooling? I'll be leaving from Fairfax. I could take one person/dog pair. Or Gunth and I could ride with another group.

My medical issues are acting up right now and I don't think it would be exactly safe for me right now. Thank you so much for being willing to carpool with me. Hopefully next time!

      March 14, 2013

    • Steve

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're better for the next one.

Hi all, I've been checking the weather forecast for Saturday. Right now the high is 52 with a 50% chance of rain. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Wardensville&state=WV&site=LWX&textField1=39.0765&textField2=-78.5937&e=0 If the chance of rain goes above 50% I will reschedule for Saturday March 30th. I will let everyone know by Friday afternoon.

This will be my first hike with the group. I'm super excited and if my pup knew what was in store he would be too!

I would love to do this hike, but my pups are now 11 and close to 13 years old, so it would be too much for them. Have fun!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
