Hard 10.5 mile Signal Knob circuit hike

This hike is rescheduled from Saturday, May 11.

Signal Knob is one the most popular hikes in the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area.   This is a hard 10.5 mile hike which will take about 5.5 hours total (including a 30min lunch break). There are some strenuous ascents, steep descents, and lots of rocks, so be prepared. You should have some previous experience hiking.  Sturdy boots are a must to avoid twisted ankles.  You can find trail maps, hiker reviews, pictures, and a ton of other helpful info here: http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/SignalKnob/.

Leashes are not required in the GWNF, so the dogs can be off leash most of the time.  If your dog is off leash, he/she must be under voice control at all times.  You also must carry a leash with you.  This is a popular hike and we will run into other people/dogs and there may be a situation when they need to be on leash.  Please review our Off Leash Policy before the hike.

There are not a lot of streams on this hike, so please bring enough water for both you and your dog.

I will cancel the event if the forecast calls for rain/thunderstorms or excessive heat.  I will update the hike by noon Friday if I decide to cancel it.

Looking forward to the hike!

Great hike with a great group of people. It was a tough hike. But the Health Nut Smoothie at the end made it all worth it. My pup tore her paw pad on the rocks though. Will have to get her some booties before we go back out there again.

I think Gert might have stepped in hot embers when she walked across the campfire. Her paws are covered in blisters and her pads are all torn up. I didn't realize how bad they were until I got them all cleaned up. We hike rocky trails quite a bit, so it makes me think it wasn't just the rocks. I am having to carry her everywhere now that we are home.

Poor puppy! Maybe it was a combo of that and hiking on hot, sharp rocks? I hope she's better soon!

Hello, it looks like I won't be able to make it either. I was offered a job yesterday and my manager would like me to train on Saturday. The job is at an upscale restaurant and Saturday is their busiest night. I'm sorry - I really wish we could make it! :(

Sorry, but the forces of the universe conspired to make it impossible to go tomorrow. Sorry to miss you all, but be safe and have fun!

Sorry, everyone. My boss' wife passed away yesterday. The funeral is Saturday. We'll have to miss this one.

Hello! So, I really, really, really want to go. However, I'm a little worried that the warm weather, lack of streams, and hike duration might be a bit much for Mushko (an Alaskan Malamute). We did a 15 mile hike to Duncan and Strickler Knob nearby on June 1st. It was about 94 degrees - way too hot for Mushko. There's currently no one on the waitlist so I'm going to keep my RSVP as a yes. If the forecast stays at or below 84 degrees for Saturday, we'll probably go (and just bring a lot of water). If the forecast increases, we'll probably back out. Several people ran out of water on the Duncan/Strickler hike so bring extra, just in case! :)

Hi everyone. I changed the hike to June 8th. They are calling for storms on Saturday afternoon. I don't want to chance it. Looking forward to seeing you all in June!

One of my profs moved our final due date to Monday so I should work on it over the weekend. I'm sorry I'll miss this trip but hope to join everyone for a hike later in May or in June (if the weather isn't too hot)! :)

If you continue straight on the big descent trail for about a 1/4 mile past the turn, the pups can take a nice cool dip in Strasburg Reservoir.

Thanks Christian! We will definitely add that into the hike!
