Easy/Medium hike at Hemlock Overlook, 4 Miles

This weekend, let's go do an oldie but a goodie at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park. The trail will wind us down a hill to follow along the meandering Bull Run waterway, eventually peeling away to circle back up through the woods to the parking lot. If there's interest, we can hop the concrete pylons to do an additional short out and back up to the railroad tracks- it's a pretty stretch of river. I'm marking this as an Easy/Medium hike because while the trails are well traveled and mostly flat, you'll experience a little elevation change to get your heart thumping, plus the trail can be rocky in places. This hike should take us about 2.5 hours.

Unless there's a cataclysmic thunderstorm forecast for Saturday morning, we'll do this hike rain or shine. If there are any changes, I will let you know by 7:00 on Saturday morning. **Be aware that the wet week ahead will likely make trails slippery and muddy,** so please come prepared for the elements- sneakers may leave you with soggy feet, so I recommend hiking shoes or boots. It'll be warm, so bring water for you and your dog.

The Northern Regional Park Authority, which operates Hemlock Overlook, requires that pets be ON LEASH.

See you on Saturday!

This was our first meetup with this group. What a great group of dogs and people! We had a great time and thought the description was spot on. Looking forward to doing it again sometime.

We had a great time, it was a new trail for us... We will definitely go back when the ground is not so wet. Glad we went!

Hi guys so sorry for the very late notice but I have to take my poor dog in to the vet again! I noticed an infected paw pad this morning. Enjoy the hike sorry again!

It looks like its going to be really nice on Sunday, can we change the hike? I would love to go but just don't want to get wet...

Sorry Kelly, it's too much to ask 19 people to rearrange at the last minute, and I've got a Mom who would be quite unhappy if I cancelled her Mother's Day brunch! Please do let me know if you decide to cancel- it's important not to leave folks waiting on you in the parking lot. Hope you decide to brave it!

Allie are you or anyone else looking to link up the those trails? I am seeing the weather is looking bad for Saturday. :(

I think we'll be ok... looks like a 30-40% chance of rain during the hike hours. Unfortunately I can't do more of the hike on Saturday because of plans later in the day, but maybe someone else on the hike would be interested?

This will be my yorkies first hike!! We take long walks though but any pointers for my two girls?

    May 9, 2013

    • Kirk W.

I don't know about pointers but there usually are golden retrievers on the hikes! :)

Just come and have fun. Never any problems between dogs or owners.

Hi Harmony, and welcome! This will be a nice walk through the woods, just come prepared for the elements- there may be mud. I usually pack an old towel to wipe my guy down before he gets back in the car, and be sure to bring water for you and your dog. If you have more specific questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

If anyone wants a lift from the Centreville park and ride on 29 or the Chantilly park and ride on Stringfellow, let me know. Tucker and I will be swinging through that way.
