National Arboretum Hike

I thought I would change up my usual hikes a bit and make this one urban :)

The arboretum is one of my favorite places to visit in DC.  It is a little oasis in the city.  Let's get together and take a long walk exploring everything it has to offer!  I would like to do a large loop, including going down to the Anacostia.  If there is a particular area you would like to visit, let me know in the comments so I can incorporate it into our route.

National Arboretum website

Length/Time: Count on 2-3 hours (about 5 miles) with the option to turn around whenever you would like.

Difficulty: Easy/Medium:  There will be some elevation changes and dirt trails.

Leash Policy: On-leash

Food/Water: Bring some water for you and your pup.  We won't stop for lunch, but bring a snack if you like.

Footwear: Walking/running shoes or sturdy hiking sandals (straps front and back - no flip flops).  Hiking boots work as well, but aren't necessary.

Weather: If it looks like heavy rain or storms I will cancel.  I will cancel at least an hour before the hike if the weather seems questionable.

This was great fun. First Trail Dogs meetup, and Hannah and I really enjoyed getting to know everyone and the scenery was also fantastic.

Another great hike by a great organizer. Hopefully they fix the fence by the river soon!

I hope they fix it too! So disappointed we couldn't play in the water. Hopefully next time.

Great time! Organizer knew all the ins and outs. My dog loved it and I'm grateful I had the chance to socialize her with so many great people and their dogs! Thanks.

Great hike with distance options. Friendly, knowledgeable organizer. She got us off the beaten path, which the dogs loved.

This was a nice group of humans and dogs, although pace was a bit fast for an easy hike.

Apologies for the late notice. Really disappointed we can't come. Had a family emergency come up. Hope someone on the wait list can fit in!

Looking forward to my first hike with this group! Can you please confirm where we are meeting, if I am looking at the arboretum map you provided? Is it by the R Street entrance? I have not been to the arboretum before, and I am driving.

Yes, go in the R st gate. Parking lot is just on the left after you enter. The visitor center is the "i" just over from the parking lot.

Hi everyone, Weather update: Looks like there's isolated showers until 2pm, then showers and thunderstorms 60% likely. I'm OK with doing this in the rain, so make sure you bring rain gear with you. I plan to finish by 1:30, so we should miss the worst of it. I can do a figure 8 loop, so we end up back near the visitor center 2/3 of the way through. That way we can stop if the weather looks bad. Reminder: If you want to update your RSVPs, please do so now. We still have a long waiting list. Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow!

I Li Iven the Woodbridge area. I'm assuming I'd have to drive in with my dog because dogs are not allowed on the metro? Where would you park if you're driving into DC with dog. Im not from the area.

    September 10, 2013

    • Sarah

There's a parking lot by the visitor center. You can also park on the street outside the gates and walk in. If you follow the link in the description to their website you should find more information.

Hello! Forgive me for the newbie question. If more people RSVP than are spots available, what happens? I would love to join, but 13 people have already RSVPed for the 12 spots.

    September 9, 2013

    • Sarah

Hi Jenny, happy to answer your question. There are actually 25 spots available, 12 remaining, 13 taken. You are still able to RSVP YES if you like. If more than 25 people RSVP, then they are put on a waiting list. As people cancel, they are moved off the waiting list to the YES list.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
