Medium/Hard 8.6 Mile Hike in GW National Forest - Meneka Peak Hike

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Where: Medium/Hard 8.6 mile Meneka Peak Hike near Front Royal, VA.  Please bring the trail map and description with you. You can print it or save it on your phone so you have it with you on the hike. You can follow this link for directions, description, printable Topo Maps, etc. The hike is about a 1.5 hour drive from the DC metro area. The climb up to the ridge-line is pretty strenuous, but once there it's not too bad.  This is an easier hike than the Signal Knob hike in the same area.  This would be good for experienced hikers and for those who have done some shorter hikes in the area and want to go a bit further. It is probably not good for beginners.

    Length/Time: 8.6 miles / 5.0 hours (circuit hike)

Difficulty: Medium/Hard due to length and steep assents.

Leashes: OFF-Leash Optional. I always recommend leashes in the parking areas. You need to have a leash with you during the hike as well.  Also a reminder to be respectful of other hikers. I usually ask that we yield the right of way to other trail users. Please read up on NOVA Traildogs off-leash policy before you sign up.

Water: There are no streams for most of the hike. Make sure you have enough for you and your dog.  Rule of thumb is 2-3 liters for every 8-12 miles.

Foot Wear: Hiking boots are strongly recommended.  This area is very rocky.

Food: A snack/lunch for the trail is always a good idea.  You can bring something for your pup as well, but please ask before sharing treats.

Carpool: For those who are going directly home after the hike and would like to carpool, I would recommend meeting at either the Vienna Metro North lot, or Centreville Park and Ride.

Weather: I will cancel by Saturday afternoon if there is a strong chance of thunderstorms.

RSVP Policy: There are usually people on the waiting list, so please update your RSVP as soon as you know you can't make it.  If you need to cancel I ask for 24 hour notice.  Please review the NOVA Traildog RSVP Policy before signing up.

Hi everyone. Unfortunately I am going to cancel the hike. One reason is the shutdown. The forests are technically closed, so as a responsible group leader I shouldn't take you to do something illegal. Another reason is it's supposed to be HOT. This hike is definitely not a good one for 80+ degree days. There is no water for the dogs to cool off in during the majority of the hike. If the govt shutdown is resolved, I will set something up for next weekend. Otherwise I hope to see you at another NOVA Trail Dog event in the future :)

I was worried about the heat and the shutdown as well, but will look for the next one........I really think you did the right thing......

I have another friend that wants to go, but I didn't see where I could put a plus one. Can someone confirm?

Hi Kathy. This hike is cancelled, but for future hikes the reason is the RSVP list is full. My limit was 20, so if you want to bring someone else (making it 21) you would have to contact me to see if there's room. I will often add someone on if they aren't bringing a dog.

Can I still go if I leave my dog at home? She is a senior with some joint issues & 5 miles seems to be about her extreme limit. That might seem like an unusual request. However, I am a dog lover that gets an endorphin rush with every dog I see. As an aside, I could probably be of some use if something happened. I worked as professional firefighter/EMT (Emergency Med Tech) for almost 20 years = ).

Hi Marianne, You are more than welcome to come on the longer hikes even if you don't bring a dog. Just let me know in the comment section. Hope to see you in the future!

I am having some joint problems and I don't think that I'd be able to complete a 8+ mile hike. Bummed as I was looking forward to it

So this is the latest I've heard about the shutdown: George Washington National Forest
The general areas of the George Washington National Forest are open and available. Developed areas (e.g. Wolf Gap and Elizabeth Furnace Campgrounds) are closed, as are their parking areas. Trailhead parking elsewhere is still open, as are the hiking trails and the forest roads. Volunteer trail work is prohibited. Per Lee District Ranger this am. I will follow the conversation. The info is from the hiking upward facebook page if anyone is interested: https://www.facebook.com/HikingUpward

Looks like technically the forest is closed, but we can still hike. There is limited help if something happens. I will keep you informed as things progress.

    Hi All!

I was listening to NPR this morning and they mentioned that the government shutdown will affect National Parks. Is there a way to find out if this park will be closed?

    October 1, 2013

The national forest is still federal lands. The website shows the US Forest Service is closed. What is unclear is if hiking trails can be accessed. I'd really like to be sure before driving out there that we can access the parking area and the trail.

Unfortunately I can't be sure. I will keep watching hiking upward reviews and see if anyone posts anything by Saturday evening. Not sure if they'd block off the parking area or not. I will send out an email if things are not resolved by Saturday and see what people would like to do.

Anyone able to recommend a camp site near the trail head or know of there are lots in the area?

    • Kevin

Yeah, I'd bet it will be closed. I'm wondering about any spots along the road out in the NF areas...

I'm sure there are some, I just don't know where any are.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
