Where: Big Schloss is within the George Washington National Forest and sits along the border between Virginia and West Virginia. This hike features a panoramic view over Trout Run Valley and should be a fantastic sunset! The hike uphill is a short, steep incline, followed by a few moderate to mild sections.  The trail is also rocky and rooty in places. Sunset is at 7:20PM with twilight until 7:46PM. We'll leave the parking lot at 5:45PM sharp to give ourselves plenty of time to reach the summit.

Additional Activities: Camping opportunity Friday and Saturday night.  Tibbit Knob hike on Saturday afternoon.  Big Schloss hike again on Saturday evening.

Camping:

Signing up for the hike does not guarantee that you will have a camping spot.  There are 10 spots first come first serve in the campground.  There are also a few spots you can hike to on the trail. If you plan on camping I would advise you to come early on Friday if possible. I plan on camping Friday and Saturday nights, arriving around noon on Friday.

Make sure you know the rules and regulations of the campground:

Wolf Gap Campground

 - Primitive -   I plan on camping Friday and Saturday nights.  There is no water, but there are pit toilets. Leashes are required in the campground.

Trail Type: Out and back

Distance: 4.1-miles total

Difficulty: Medium (see our Trail Rating System for more details)

Hiking Time:[masked] hours (including sunset time)

Facilities: Pit toilets at trailhead, campsites available

Restrictions: Off leash opportunity (see off leash guidelines); dogs must be leashed in the campground, but can be off on the trail

What to Bring: We lucked out that is also a 99% full moon, so we should have lots of light getting down the from the knob. You should bring flashlights or headlamps with fresh batteries, appropriate clothing and footwear for winter weather, poo bags, plenty of water for you and your dog, and a camera!!

Weather: Will cancel for rainy/completely overcast conditions.

Additional Activities: This hike follows our Tibbit Knob hike earlier that day, you can sign up for one or both. Also, for anyone who would like, we can have a cook out following the 2nd hike at Wolf Gap Campground.  I am going up Friday night, and plan on staying both Friday and Saturday.  Spots are first come/first serve, so I recommend coming on Friday if you want a spot.  Even if you aren't staying overnight, you are welcome to hang out for a little while after the hike.

Directions: For customized driving directions, follow this link to the hiking upward site.  You can get google directions and see pictures of the parking area.

    Sarah,

Thanks for setting up this hike and camping trip. Gunther and I had a great time. Gunther was a little skeptical of the tent at first, but he did fine. Next time we'll do both nights.

Hi everyone! Right now only NOVA TDs at the campground. I reserved 5 spots and marked them in the reservation board. The weather is gorgeous! Hope to see you soon.

Hi all. Picked up some firewood off from exit 6 in Front Royal at an Exxon station. If you're coming from DC, turn left after exiting. The Exxon will be on your right next to a McDonalds after you go under 66.

Hey guys, Looking forward to tomorrow night. I had some family stuff come up, so Gunther and I will only be camping Friday night. Looks like the weather is going to be beautiful Saturday. Hope you have fun.

I spoke with a friend who bikes there and knows the area very well. He says the official campsites will fill up quickly so get there as early as you can. He also mentioned that since it is National Forest you can pretty much camp anywhere as long as there is a spot to park your vehicle. There are also a couple additional sites on an unmarked access across the road. Share sites as needed. I'll be in a campervan so don't really need an official site.

Oops. I wrote down that this trip was last weekend; I suppose that's an indication of how bombarded I was. I'm going to put myself on the waitlist, lol.

I can do the day hike. Is it ok to bring my campgear just in case someone doesn't show up?

That's fine. And you're welcome to stay if there's space :)

Hi everyone! I have limited the RSVPs because I'm assuming most Friday night people will want to camp. The campground sites are very limited and also first come/first serve. If you do not want to camp, but would like to just do the hike and drive back to DC, let me know. I would be willing to open more slots to people who don't want to camp.
