Where: 2hrs from DC - Woodstock, VA . Link to 8.8 mile Laurel Run/Stack Rocks Hike. Follow link to save/print map, find out more details, read reviews, get directions, etc.
The Trailhead Parking Can Be Tricky to Find - Here are the details from Hiking Upward: Parking directions (using google directions from their site) are for the first area and the closed gate at Laurel Run. If the gate is open, continue for another 1.1 miles and park on just before yellow marked trail closed gate. Note: Forestry Road 252 has private property on either side before re-entering the GWNF and reaching the parking area. Do Not camp or park on private property. Parking area GPS coordinates:[masked], [masked]
Length: 8.8 Miles; 6.6 if gates are open to upper parking area.
Time: 5.5 Hours
Off-Leash Optional: Please read the National Forest Leash Guidelines and NOVA Traildogs off-leash policy before you sign up. I always recommend leashes in the parking areas and they are required in the campground and recreation areas. You need to have a leash with you during the hike as well. Also a reminder to be respectful of other hikers. I usually ask that we yield the right of way to other trail users.
Water: I don't think there is much water along this trail so make sure you bring enough for you and your dog. Rule of thumb is 2-3 liters/person (not counting dogs) for every 8-12 miles.
Foot Wear: Hiking boots are required. This area is very rocky.
Food: A snack/lunch for the trail is always a good idea. You can bring something for your pup as well, but please ask before sharing treats.
Additional Activities: Camping - Wolf Gap Campground. Wolf Gap is a primitive campground about a 20 min drive from the trail head. There are 9 campsites on a first come first serve basis. I don't know if I'm camping or not, but I would suggest getting there on Friday or before the hike on Saturday if you want a spot. You can also find spots along the road in the national forest if you want something closer to the trailhead.
Carpool: I would recommend meeting at either the Vienna Metro North lot, or Centreville Park and Ride.
Weather: I will cancel by Friday afternoon if there is a strong chance of rain or thunderstorms.
RSVP Policy: There are usually people on the waiting list, so please update your RSVP as soon as you know you can't make it. If you need to cancel I ask for 24 hour notice. Please review the NOVA Traildog RSVP Policy before signing up.
