Create a Change Now: Enjoy a Circus Garden Party!!!

Would you like to take advantage of an opportunity to make a difference for the children in our community, help fight childhood obesity and have a whole lot of fun while you're at it?

Create a Change Now is a local non-profit organization that fights childhood obesity by educating children on healthy eating habits and encourages a hands-on approach in the kitchen. Create A Change Now’s mission is to teach elementary school students how to plant edible gardens in schools and partners with local chefs to teach students how to prepare and cook the food they harvest. Create a Change Now has gardens at several local elementary schools including: Rose Warren, JT McWilliams and Ollie Detweiller.

We are hosting our first family-friendly fundraiser Circus Garden Party on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Historic Fifth Street School, downtown. Funds raised from this event will help support nutritional education as well as planting more edible gardens in schools. We hope you will consider becoming a volunteer.

Tonight, we need 12 reliable, enthusiastic AOKers to help break down and clear up from all the festivities. Organizers are guessing that it should not take more than an hour, but we will, for sure we well on our way by 8PM.

THE BEST PART IS.....AS A VOLUNTEER YOU CAN GO TO THE PARTY EARLY FOR FREE AND ENJOY THE AWESOME FUN THAT THEY HAVE IN STORE BEFORE HELPING WITH THE TEAR DOWN.  I CAN'T WAIT. Please visit

https://www.facebook.com/createachangenow to learn more about all the great activities happening from 3-6.

Parking can be tricky down there, so you can either look for on street parking or put your car at The EL Cortex and take the short walk to the Historic 5th Street School.

Please, please, please RSVP with integrity.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to be in touch.

Hi Mary-Beth. I was not sure if I had a place or not. Tried to RSVP but it never showed up when I checked. When I did it said there was a waiting list. So I was confused. Maybe next time I will understand how this works. Hope I wasn't considered one of the no shows.

No worries, Debbie. I believe that you did indeed get placed on the waitlist. If you have troubles in the future, please feel free to contact one of the organizers.

First off, let me thank each of you who volunteered at this event n Saturday. I saw a few of you there when I arrived at about 5:45. . So...a thousand times thanks. This was a first time event for us and I was hoping that the partnership would be a successful one. I am not sure why folks RSVP and then no show with nary a heads up.

Thank you Wendy. Sometimes at these events it is hard for me to gather all the AOK people because there are some that I have never met before either. The volunteering is what matters, so thank you for your help and positive attitude. Sorry that you did not get fruit. My grandson sure appreciated the banana last night. I hope to meet you soon. Smiles, M

Joanne, so glad that you made it out with your daughter. I would have loved to have met her......next time. I was there only briefly, and believe me, I get turned around all the time in the Downtown area. One of these days , I am going to park and just explore. Thank you for volunteering to help this great organization and for being a part of AOK.

It was a really nice event. The people were very friendly
But there were not close to 12 volunteers there (the amount who RSVP'd when I checked an hour before the event). I think there were 3 of us, maybe 4. Still, we finished quickly, got done early, and got some free fruit too.

      what...free fruit?!? I didn't see that lol.

It was a wonderful event with beautifully presented food samples all of which were excellent, many activities for children. Was not pleased with the parking instructions to park at the El Cortez. The attendant into the parking garage was not happy to let a group of volunteers in without prior notice. He let me in but asked that I let it be known they should be notified in the future, the parking is for hotel guests only. In addition walking from the El Cortez to the school is a distance and not through the best part of town especially as it got to be later in the evening, I was not comfortable with this. I asked another lady to walk with me that also parked at the El Cortez.

    • Mary-Beth

Glad that you had a good time, Sigrid. I am sorry about the parking. Those were the instructions that were given to me by the organizers of the event. It is my understanding that The El Cortez was one of the sponsors of the event. In fact, they hosted all of the training sessions for the volunteers who helped during the day. Perhaps their management did not let them know. I saw you across the lot and tried to say hello, but you did not see me. Again, my apologies. I will surely pass along your message to the organizers.

I arrived there at about 5:45, and I found parking in the lot right behind the school. I actually had my son drive me because the organizers told me that on-street parking was going to be tricky. Again, sorry.

      September 7, 2013

  • Mary-Beth

You can park at El Cortez and make the short walk if that is easier than on street parking.

So today is the big day for Create a Change Now. I hope that all of you are planning on enjoying the afternoon. When you go to the front gate, just give them your name and let them know that you are volunteering on the clean-up. You will have free admission. Please be back at registration NO LATER than 5:55. You will be checking in with Julie. I have a wicked ear ache so I am only coming for our volunteer time. I am looking forward to seeing all of you. PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE RAIN OR SHINE. If you have any questions, please text me at[masked]
    THANK YOU
