To Kill a Mockingbird. Little Women. The Giving Tree. Harry Potter. These are just a few of the books that have added life, joy and memories to my days. I even started to collect books for my boys long before they were born. These days I share the joy of reading with my precious grandson who has a life in which he is surrounded by word-filled treasures. At four, he already has his favorites that we read over and over again.
It is hard to imagine a life without books, but sadly many children right here in Clark County do not have regular, easy access to books.
Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing early childhood literacy by placing books into the hands and homes of children within Southern Nevada’s at-risk, low income communities. Through community collaboration, mentorship and family partnership programs, Spread the Word Nevada fosters reading and language development opportunities ultimately leading to brighter academic and economic futures for these children. They are dedicated to changing the lives of our at-risk children, one book at a time.
This morning we will meet at the Henderson location to clean the used books that are donated and then given to children to help them build home libraries. Please come dressed comfortably, with closed toe shoes and plenty of elbow grease.
As an added gift from AOK, I am asking that each volunteer bring along a new or gently used book to help the program build their supplies. (Of course, this is optional).
