Five years ago I was sitting in my apartment, frustrated by the fact I couldn't find a volunteer organization that I could work with around my busy schedule. With a similiar mindset as all of you, I decided, it was time to find a solution to the problem. In networking at different events, I quickly learned of Meetup.com and it seemed like the perfect platform to create what I had in mind and A.O.K (Acts of Kindness) was formed.
Back then we were simply known as Las Vegas Volunteer group and our catchy named developed later. I am extremely proud of what we have built since then. I have met the most incredible people, all have touched my heart; some have become my best friends.
Did you know we have spent over 2000 hours helping our community since then? That is over 80 straight days of service! I wish there was a way we could find out how much money we have donated/raised for different causes; or how many items we have donated. Although any kind of number would be difficult to come up with, you have to know our impact as been tremendous and we should all be very proud of the work we have done. I hear so many stories from everyone in this group of how lives have been changed within our group of members (even a couple of marriages) and some tremendous stories of deep change within our community.
I want to celebrate this special day with all of you and I hope many of you can join us for a potluck in the park. We will set up some music, some games and have some great food and celebrate. This is a great opportunity to catch up with members you may have not seen in a while and get a chance to meet some new members in a casual environment.
We will meet at Sunset Park near the volleyball courts - look for the AOK banner on a big blue wall. Bring a blanket or chair to chill out on and enjoy the day with new and old friends. Please bring a dish to share with the group and I will provide water. If you would like something else to drink, please bring that as well.
Also, if you have items that you would like to donate to the upcoming AFAN yard sale, this would be a great time to bring those as we will have trucks set up to bring the items to Mary-Beth's home afterwards. I will also have a book set up for all to share your AOK stories; whether its why you joined or how its made a difference in your life, I would love if you would share your story with us. It's something we can grow with in the years to come and look back on 10 years from now.
It doesn't matter if you joined the group today, or you have been here since day one; come out and celebrate A.O.K, and yourselves with us. You deserve it! [:x]
