Let's Be Friends Game Night

Today I stumbled up on this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/15/fashion/the-challenge-of-making-friends-as-an-adult.html

It's talking about how hard it can be to make friends as an adult. I know I have a hard time at this and so does pretty much everyone I know! On the Facebook page I do for single lesbians (link below), there's a discussion going on as well about it so I thought ... why not a Meetup that was sorta like a single's thing except YOU AREN'T THERE TO FIND ROMANCE. You are there to just make friends! No pressure, no expectations ... just a way to make friends.

This is going to be a fun, unique night. Again, this is NOT a single's event. This is an event to make friends at!

Your assignment: bring in whatever board games you love to play ... scrabble, chess, checkers, cards, whatever - set yourself up at a table and allow others to sit and play with you. This way you will 1) meet people who like the same games you do 2) rotate around chatting and talking and making friends while playing.

If you don't want to play/bring games - not to worry - just mix and mingle instead!

As usual, 49 Grove will close the doors to the public so we can take it over.

• $10 cover

• Open vodka bar from 6:30 - 7:30

• Drink specials throughout the night

Nice to meet everyone! For people interested in finding for themselves the storytelling game I brought, it's called "Once Upon a Time," by Atlas Games. Hope this event happens again, and that Cards Against Humanity actually makes an appearance. ;)

What time will this event end?

    August 23, 2013

    • Bridget

The official end is 11 because 49 Grove will open up it's doors to the public then. OR if it just dies out before. :)

      August 23, 2013

    • Leisa

      Ok. Thanks Bridget

  • GRETA

    Hey Bridget,
    I'm assuming it's over by 8 or 9??
    If it starts at 6:30
(say someone is stuck late at work)

    August 23, 2013

    • Bridget

actually we have 49 grove privately for us til 11. it will end then or if it just died out sooner so it's hard to say.

      August 23, 2013

  • Bridget

Guys - just letting you know I will be a little bit late to this. There will be a doorman collecting the $10 and he is also the owner so if you need something let him know. When you get there just set your games up and start playing and I'll be along momentarily. Can't wait!

Guys, couple things about tomorrow. If you're wanting to play games other than what you bring don't feel like you have to sit at your game all night. BUT make sure you keep an eye on your game or ask someone playing to watch it while you go elsewhere. I don't want anyone losing their game or leaving it at 49 Grove so just help each other out and keep an eyeball on each other's games. :)

    August 20, 2013

    • Mary Anne F.

Bridget, you said "tomorrow". Did you mean Friday?? Friday us a yes for me; tomorrow would be a no! Please confirm the date. Thanks!

    • Bridget

      Friday! My bad!

      August 20, 2013

  • Mary Anne F.

OK, I got a babysitter. Me and my solo self will be there!

    August 20, 2013

  • IndigoSun

I will bring a few different games that are easy to learn, easy to talk during because they don't require too much concentration, and don't last forever so there can be switching up of groups. I like childlike wonder, so I am thinking of bringing Racko, Sequence (a little like Connect Four but on a mat with cards), Rummicub, and CandyLand! I'll just see what people feel like. I might also bring coloring stuff and paper, nothing makes an easier way to get to know people like drawing silly stuff together! Also starts a good conversation about what's your favorite color... :)

    1 · August 20, 2013

  • Jasmine

I'll bring regular cards and Magic cards. Might be a bit late though depending on when I get off work and how bad traffic is.

    August 20, 2013

  • GRETA

    I've got "cards against humanity"
    ;)

Oooohh sounds like my kind of game

      August 19, 2013

    • Christina

I'd like to try this, too. :)

      August 20, 2013

  • Rachel W

I'll be bringing uno and apples to apples, which is fairly similar to cards against humanity if enough people are interested to sustain both games, which it looks like there will be.

    August 19, 2013

    • Erin

Oooh Rachel! I will be at your table for UNO!!!!

      August 19, 2013

  • Mary Anne F.

Sounds like a plan y'all!! Now just let me continue working on getting a sitter for my 8 y.o. son and I will be good to go!

    August 19, 2013

  • Lisa

Lol, im really hoping someone brings Cards Against Humanity!

    August 19, 2013

  • Bridget

I can't wait for next Friday! Who's bringing what games?!

    August 16, 2013

    • Erin

Do they have to be board games? Can I bring UNO cards?

      August 19, 2013

    • Bridget

The goal of this event is for YOU to bring games. 49 Grove doesn't have any. Yep, bring Uno and whatever else you'd want to play with people.

Hi everyone. Looking forward to a casual night out and meeting some great people. This will be my first meet up with this group. Feel free to stop by and say hi! See you'll on Friday =)

Hi, is anyone attending this event alone? This might sound like a strange question, but if I do go I will most likely be attending solo! Don't want any awkwardness, ya know?

    August 19, 2013

    • Bridget

Laides, plenty of women come alone to these events! Don't worry. Plus the whole point is to make friends and if you're already coming with a gaggle of gal pals that kinda defeats the purpose! :)

      1 · August 19, 2013

I'm flying solo. These women are awesome!

Not a strange question - I too will be attending solo and it appears this event is geared towards individuals without the pressure of an uncomfortable dating situation. Should be a fun night!

Love this idea, hope I can make it! Ladies can't be about getting into a couple 24/7, sometimes you just wanna hang out with your pals! Lady events are such high-pressure things, they always feel like a meat market even when it's not formally a singles event, so really glad for a specifically friend-only zone to take the pressure off so FUN takes priority. The best parts of life come from not trying so hard, just letting go and relaxing. Definitely hope you do more!

Can't attend/have prior commitment. This sounds GREAT so I hope you do it again-- I'd love to go next time!
