This is a community for Autistic Adults (18 years and older) living in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C. It is organized by an Autistic Adult, for Autistic Adults. We are an inclusive group, ALL Autistic diagnoses are welcome.Verbal or NonverbalALLAutistic adults are welcome to join.Autism is not an illness or a disease, there is no "cure" for Autism.
This group is a safe space, it is not a place to find interview subjects or subjects of any other kind - we aren't lab rats, it is instead a place for those who have felt left out, alone, weird, etc. to find others like them. Journalists, (Autistic or Neurotypical), are asked to keep their journalistic queries away from us. Our gatherings are meant to be a place where Autistics can truly be themselves around others like them, stims and all and feel at ease.
This group is ONLY for Autistic adults, this is not a group for those offering professional services to Autistic adults, Neurotypical spouses of Autistics, Neurotypical siblings of Autistic adults, or the Neurotypical parents of Autistic adults. Non-verbal Learning Disability is similar to Autism, but it is NOT Autism. ONLY Autistic adults may join this group.
Being an Adult on the Autism Spectrum means that it is harder for us to get to know people and make friends than our NT counterparts, the aim of this group is to make it easier in a more relaxed atmosphere where you can be yourself, stims and all! Speaking of stims, stim toys are always welcome at our gatherings. What is not welcome is recording at our gatherings without asking everyone present first. Eye contact is not essential to be part of this group; all you need is a desire to do neat things!
Join us, share your experiences and keep updated on Autism Activism. Help us to build a Washington, D.C. area Autistic Community together!
