Hike/rappel the Subway in Zion

This is a great chance to experience one of the best hikes in the US!

My friend has 3 permit spots available for a hike down the famous Subway in Zion National Park, starting July 14.  Normally, the route is booked solid months in advance, so this is a rare opportunity.

Description of the route: http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/thesubway.htm

This is mostly a hike, but does require rope skills (there are 3 rappels up to 30 feet on the way down).  So please sign up only if you know how to rappel and have appropriate equipment.  Previous canyoneering experience is also very helpful.

My friend Jennifer is a member of Adventure-Us, but not an organizer, so I'm posting the event on her behalf. Here's her original message (Remember to contact her directly for more details/carpool arrangements/etc):

Hello everybody!

My two friends and I (all in our mid-30's) will be embarking through The Subway in Zion on Sunday 7/14 for the first time. Our permit is for 6 people and right now I believe we have 3 spots open. We have a campsite reserved at Watchman Campground Sat 7/13-Tuesday 7/16-you're welcome to stay with us. We have one experienced male leading one very capable female rock-climber and one very capable hiker/scrambler. Both females have done two days of rappelling.

We are looking for experienced canyoneers to join us-people who are patient, laid back, safety oriented, and fun! of course. Preferably people who have done the trek before and/or own a GPS and know how to use it.

Thanks so much for your time in considering this offer! If you're interested, please email me at [masked].
I look forward to hearing from you!

Zion is a 7 hour drive from LA (or a flight to Vegas and a 3 hour drive from there). I know Jen is planning to drive, but I am not sure about how much room she has in the car. You will have to talk to her to see if carpool is convenient depending on when you can make it up and if you want to do anything in Zion.

As to costs, that should be minimal. Shared campground fees should be fairly cheap (< $10 a person), and other than that, the only other major expense I can think of is possibly splitting the gas if you carpool.

O.M.G. I loved the Subway. One of the best hikes I ever done in my life! Have a great time Lei and the rest of the group. Take lots of photos!!! The last part of the hike might be a bit tricky to find the way up but, just keep walking.... on your right hand side, you will eventually find a trail. If you have a way to know the altitude versus what the map tells you where the trail is, you will find it pretty easily. The trail is a semi-well marked trail so don't start going up anything that doesn't look like a trail! :) Good luck and have a blast. Also, hope you guys have summer wetsuit or something. The water can be freezing cold!

Lastly, I am sure you guys know this. If it might rain, don't take your chance. Flush flood occurs really quickly in the those canyons. Stay safe. :) I look forward to the photos! :)

I believe Jen already has a rope, so unless you get separated from the main group, you would not need a rope. Just harness and belay device. These can be rented from local climbing gyms if necessary.

Sounds incredible! Unfortunately, I can't go cause I don't have the gear. But for anyone else that may be interested, you may want to mention costs and travel arrangements.

Would love to do this, but I have to work sometimes, otherwise there'll be no playtime, 2nd childhoods don't come cheap
