There are four permits available for Monday, but I will not reserve them until I get a firm count. They cost $13 per person! For five people it's $75!!! Unless you truly intend to go, do not sign up. Be prepared to reimburse me if you sign up; then drop out at the last minute!!!
Forecast: hot weather but be prepared for cold.
Carpooling: Please be aware that YOU are responsible to get yourself to the appointed meeting place and time. We carpool from there.
Please note: I have NOT done this trail before so I cannot be considered your expert leader. I make every effort to check for current trail conditions, but often there are no reports so I do not guarantee anything about the trip!
REMINDER: PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP IF YOU ARE NOT IN GOOD SHAPE/HAVE NO BACKPACKING EXPERIENCE. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP!
Lake Caroline/Windy Pass is my first choice. NO dogs allowed on this trail. I can't be sure we can secure permits as it is considered to be in the Enchantments although it is not the main Enchantments trail.
The plan: Backpack about 7 miles with 3000 gain (so not so easy - be sure you're in shape to do this please) to Little Lake Caroline (guidebook says the camping is better there than at Lake Caroline - guess it depends on permits also). Set up camp. Day 2: 10 miles or so roundtrip over Windy Pass to Trout Lake and back - looks like some elevation gain/loss. Day Three: drop off backpacks at intersection with Eightmile Lake - about two miles roundtrip off the main trail and explore over there; head out early enough to avoid commuter traffic through Monroe.
If that's a no go, Ingalls Lake would be choice two (no dogs allowed - carpool meetup location could change). It is in the Teanaway. I have been there as a day hike and would love to spend a night up there. We would spend one night; then come down and car camp along the river and hike up Koppen Mtn or Miller Peak as those are the two hikes up there I have yet to do. Both are supposed to have fabulous views. If that happens, please bring some wood for car camping if you can. I should be able to decide the week of July 15 so we'd know what we're doing.
Bring: backpacking supplies, food for two nights out, Forest Service parking pass required for parking at the trailhead, money for gas to carpool drivers, prepare for cold at night/hot during day, bugs
Carpool: Please make comments if you want to carpool to my house. We will definitely carpool from my house. I'm right off of Highway 2. If you are coming from somewhere out of the way from my house, please meet at the trailhead or ? Make comments about that please!
