Alpine Scramble: Bean Peak

Bean Peak, located in the Teanaway north of Cle Elum, is an off-trail Class 2 alpine scramble on steep terrain including dirt and rock.  The final summit block, on rock, is steep and slightly exposed.

The following Class 2 rating description is from the book Climbing Washington's Mountains: Easy scrambling with some exposure where you could be killed or seriously injured in a fall, but where you aren't likely to fall off unless you make a serious blunder.  Use of hands and feet required.  Might seem scary in places to inexperienced scramblers but not technically difficult.

Maximum Participants: 8

Skills/Experience: Class 2 alpine rock scrambling experience.

Distance: 9 miles roundtrip

Elevation gain: 3,500 feet

Pace: Moderate (~800 ft of elevation gain per hour)

Duration: ~4 hour ascent and ~3 hour descent

Difficulty: Strenuous

Permit: NW Forest Pass

Drive duration from park-n-ride to trailhead: 120 mins

Carpooling and fuel reimbursement: Riders please bring cash (10 cents per mile per passenger) to compensate your driver.

    Beautifully quiet day in the Teanaway.

    Other than a couple of people in the parking lot, we were the only ones hiking in Bean Creek Basin and the only ones scrambling Bean Peak. The other nearby peaks, too, were people-less.

    For next fall, Miki and I talked about getting a group together to return and scramble Bean and nearby Volcanic Neck, a peak I've long wanted to summit.
