Urban Hike - Gasworks/Queen Anne/Waterfront

Join us for a hike through a variety of Seattle trails, parks, waterfronts and neighborhoods. Highlights will include Gasworks Park, the Troll under the Aurora Bridge, Fremont, Queen Anne Hill, Seattle Center, the Olympic Sculpture Park, the Seattle Waterfront parks, the Queen Anne south viewpoint parks, lunch at the Hilltop Ale House on Queen Anne, and the trails along the Ship Canal.

Hiking conditioning required for this hike: This will be a moderately strenuous hike, 12 miles total with 2400 feet vertical gain.  To sign up for this hike, you need be regularly doing hikes that are at least 8 miles and 2000 feet vertical gain, or equivalent aerobic activity such as long-distance cycling or running.  When signing up, please answer the sign-up questions. RSVP's without answers to the sign-up questions will be deleted.


Distance: 12 miles RT

Elevation gain: 2433 feet

Difficulty: Moderately strenuous; not for beginning hikers (this is a long hike with a lot of steep hill climbs).

Hiking time: ~ 8 hours including lunch stop.

Hiking speed: Moderately fast pace, 30 minutes a mile, with stops at various viewpoints.

Schedule and Itinerary:

8:00 AM - Meet at the Gasworks Park parking lot.

8:15 AM - Start hiking.

~ 11:00 AM - Arrive at Seattle Center (4.5 miles total).

~ 2:00 PM - Lunch at the Hilltop Ale House on Queen Anne (9.2 miles total). 

~ 4:15 PM - Arrive back at Gasworks Park (11.9 miles total).

Please allow for and expect that we may get back later than scheduled. The hiking time will vary depending upon the group, the conditions, and our activities along the way.


RSVP: This hike is cross-posted.  Please sign up on only one meetup.  RSVP sizes may be adjusted amongst the meetups depending upon sign-up responses.

Dogs: Hikers only on this hike; no dogs, please.

Families welcome: Your kids (youth, teen, or adult) who are capable of doing the hike are welcome on this hike.  Please include them as guests in your RSVP.

No parking passes required. Ample free parking is available.

Weather:  We'll go rain or shine.  Dress appropriate to the weather, and dress in layers, as this hike has up-hills where you'll get hot and sweaty no matter the weather.

What to bring: Sturdy hiking boots, light or medium-weight non-cotton clothing for the uphills, warm mittens or gloves, light or medium-weight hat, also a warm hat, rain jacket, rain pants, warm, dry clothes, preferably fleece, for the beach hikes and downhills, 1+ liters of water, trail snacks, day-pack large enough to hold all the above. Optional and recommended: waterproof pack-cover, hiking poles, camera.
