15 Pound Overnight Challenge: Lake Escondido

Yep. Don't show up unless your pack is 15 pounds or less including food, shelter, water purification, enough clothing, etc. This light weight backpacking challenge does not include the weight of water, but all other liquids. For weight in at Sno Valley Coffee and again right before the hike at the trailhead, only water is excluded from your pack.

The goal of a 15 pound challenge is to scale back the basic essentials. It can be done comfortably. Having a light backpack is important for comfort and safety. I do these 15 pound challenges to teach me what is absolutely essential. Start laying out your gear today to put together your best lightweight pack.

Lake Escondido is located in the Salmon la Sac area in the Central Cascades. The hike is 6.7 miles with a 2,300-foot-gain. It's a beautiful lake filled with trout and surrounded by meadows. The berries should be plentiful too.

If it is nasty weather, I will plan to bring a very large tarp just-in-case other light weight shelters fail.

Are you up for the challenge ... we will see.

PS: If you want to impress your organizer, have the ability to pull luxury items out of your pack at 15 pounds or less.

Tips for Brent's 15 pound challenge.
    1. Eat lunch right before hitting the trail. Less food weight to carry.
    2. Bring enough water for the entire trip. 6 litters would probably be enough. My water treatment backup is iodine tablets.

I like the Big Agnes Fly Creek, because it's only 1lb 10oz. Much better than a bivy, imho.

I have 3 lbs tent that is just big enough for 2. If anybody wants to help carry the polls. Otherwise I was just going to bivy

Lol, from the title I thought you're adding 15 pounds extra to your regular overnight backpack ) That would be a challenge.

Sounds fun! Would you be okay with me bringing my dog? He's an expert hiker and has his own pack that always weighs less than 15 lbs (I won't let him carry any of my stuff) ;)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
