The Physical Cliff Hike:

For months, the media and politicians of all stripes have been trying to scare us about going over the cliff!

Let's show we are not afraid!  North of the GW Bridge is a magnificent physical cliff.  We will approach it, look over the top...and then, GO OVER IT!  We'll admire it from the bottom, and then, we'll find a way back to the top!

Join us, but just remember to bring your tax returns, you check book, and LEAVE YOUR SENSE OF ENTILEMENT(S) AT HOME!

Special consideration given to those who routinely spend more than they earn and those whose personal net worth is in deep negative territory.  Two-percenters (and even more so) one-percenters are also welcome....you'll be buying the refreshments after the hike!

Details:

Mostly easy miles.  One big climb of 500ft.  Near the end, probably an option to do an extra 2 miles, including traversing the challenging Giant Stairs.

We'll head south on the Long Path from Stateline Lookout to Park HQ off Closter Dock road.  Then down to the water and back north on the Shore Trail (Sure, trail?).

Pace: moderate, but with reasonable stops for enjoying the views and the company. (So please, no nonstop hikers!)

Bus Riders: There's a bus from Port Authority and or GW/Bridge. http://www.coachusa.com/CoachUsaAssets/files/97/route09.pdf

Get off at Oak Tree Road in Palisades, NY.  I can give 3 people a ride from there.  Please mention in your RSVP.  If we get more than 3 bus riders, maybe some other drivers will step up.

Drivers: Palisades Parkway to Stateline Lookout.  If you are willing to offer rides, please say so in your RSVP and in your comments.

Release:  You participate at your own risk.  This is not a commercial or professionally guided event. We are here to have fun, not to look after your safety.  You have to do that!  By attending you acknowledge that you have read our liability release and emergency contact form and agree to be bound by same.   A sample can be found in the Pages tab.

http://www.meetup.com/adventurers-134/pages/Sample_Release_and_Emergency_Contact_Form/

Dogs...are most welcome. See our dog policy in the Pages tab and let us know you are bringing one by mentioning it in your RSVP. http://www.meetup.com/adventurers-134/pages/Bringing_a_Dog_on_a_Hike/

What to bring: Proper footwear, snack/lunch, extra clothing.  Flashlight or headlamp.  We plan to be out before dark, but you never know what can happen.

Afterwards: Maybe brew and eats somehwere.  Optional, of course.

Carpooling:  It's up to you to arrange. Post in comments if you would like to find a ride or can offer.  The more info you give, the easier it is to make arrangements.   Those who want to take the bus, see info above.

Weather:  Poor weather may cancel the hike

 Hope to see you there

Rob

A big thank you to all who joined me, one fine group I must say, and one super dog. Special thanks to Cindy for toting my water and to Tim for GPS tracking and posting the stats...excellent app, have not seen before. Looks like we did 10 miles with 700+ ft. of elevation.

Our group is large enough, so I've closed RSVPs. I note that there is space available on another meetup hike of about the same length led by Svetlan in Harriman:

Two of us in Brooklyn are thinking of renting a Zipcar... I bet we could take two more comfortably and three uncomfortably; I'd just ask that each chip in $20. Or does anyone have two spots in their car?

    December 21, 2012

    • Cindy

Hwey Jonathan, are you still renting car?

      December 22, 2012

    • Cindy

Oops, sorry - just saw that you are riding with Brian.

      December 22, 2012

  • Cindy

YAY! I just got moved onto the RSVP-ed list. Thanks Rob. Does anyone have a spot left in their car that I can carpool or anyone renting car still?

    December 22, 2012

  • Rob

Hey all, please change your RSVP to NO if your plans have changed. Don't be a no-show or a last-minute cancellation. If anyone is still coming via bus, let me know by tomorrow night so I can pick you up at Oak Tree road.

I am on the waiting list. Please let me know if waiting list is restrictive. I will need heads up to arrange transportation.

    December 21, 2012

    • Rob

Leon, yes, the waiting list exists because I don't like large groups. But since you asked, I'll move you up. However, plz leave the club at home. lol.

Hello, would someone be able to give me a lift from Brooklyn or Manhattan? I can also take the bus, but will definitely need pick up from the stop to the meeting point. Thanks!

Rob, this is a loop along Palisades? Alpine is a bit north of the bridge? I have hiked over the bridge and then done a few miles along the Palisades and back, it isn't much elevation or difficulty is it?

    December 19, 2012

    • Rob

Hi Patti...the starting point is Stateline Lookout of the Palisades Parkway, about 10 miles north of the GWB. The terrain is indeed similar to what you walked on close to the bridge. There is 500 ft. of elevation to get back to the top. If you do the optional extra 2 miles at the end (Giant Stairs), then the terrain is advanced.

I was trying to gauge if my 13 year old could manage this--we did Storm King Mtn and she was like a gazelle, no issues with the elevation nor the scrambling--let me know what you think

    December 19, 2012

  • Smita

Would be happy to rideshare - and chip in for gas and tolls and such. Thanks in advance!

    December 19, 2012

  • Anna

Hey let me know if there is room left for me to join a ride. Thanks :)

    December 19, 2012

  • kay

Hi, I was hoping to ride with someone if they have space instead of driving alone. The point is to make more friends. And of course, I will share the gas, tolls, etc and bring some snacks for the drive. Please post a message to let me know if I can ride with you. I need to add my picture and will do so now.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
