Umstead State Park Trail Day

We'll hike all the trails in William B. Umstead State Park on this first Saturday of Spring.  The distance will be 24 miles at an average pace of 3 miles per hour.  The hike will start promptly at 8:00 AM and be completed at approximately 6:00 PM.  That's a full 8 hours of hiking plus 2 hours for restroom breaks,  snacks, and lunch.  You'll need to be in shape for this hike.

The sequence of trails will be the following:  Sycamore Trail and Company Mill Spur Trail to Company Mill Trail.  Company Mill Trail to the Reedy Creek Entrance parking lot. Loblolly Trail out and back to Reedy Creek Entrance parking lot.  Company Mill Trail and Inspiration Trail back to Sycamore Trail. Sycamore Trail back to the Crabtree Creek Entrance parking lot (Meetup location).  We'll then finish the remaining 6 miles of trails.  Pott's  Branch Trail, Oak Rock Trail, Sal's Branch Trail, and the Campground Spur Trail.

The time table for the individual trails and lunch break will be the following:

• 8:00 AM - Sycamore Trail/Company Mill Trail

• 10:30 AM - Loblolly Trail

• 12:30 PM - Lunch Break

• 1:00 PM - Company Mill Trail/Sycamore Trail

• 3:45 PM - Pott's Branch/Oak Rock/Sal's Branch Trails

Meetup in the farthest parking lot from the Crabtree Creek Entrance.  Go past the visitor center and proceed to the end of the road.

This hike will be canceled if there is insufficient member interest by Saturday March 15.  So don't wait till the last minute to RSVP.  Rain date for the hike will be Sunday March 23.

I've never hiked this far. I'm simply amazed that there are some in this group that can do this sort of hike. Wow.

I wasn't joking - the longest hike I ever did was Mt. Kahtaden in Maine (14 miles). Of course that had a 5000 ft elevation but still it was way over the edge for me. 20+ miles is brutal.

I have enjoyed this hike tremendously, although I did not complete the whole thing. Thank you Terry and everyone for the great company!

You are a trooper! I saw the sore on your heel--hope it heals soon. You must have been in pain, but you made it to the cars and said you enjoyed it. Hopefully next time you hike you will not get a sore.

GREAT hike! Wonderful weather. Boon companions. Fantastic physical challenge. And all organized by Terry with his usual penchant for detail.
26.3 miles! At last we all did a REAL marathon. Thanks to all. Really enjoyed the multiplicity of interactions. Next year let's bump it up a couple more miles.

Great day of hiking! Perfect weather. Good to see everyone. Well-organized Terry. Each section of the hike took the amount of time you predicted. It was nice having some people join us for parts of the trail.

So we will be covering part of the Company Mill trail twice, is that correct? ..the part from the bridge to the parking lot and back again. I will bring a map. I assume you will tell us as we set off which way we are supposed to turn at the intersections of loops. Thanks

It occurs to me that my plane from Chicago will get into Raleigh about 11 pm the night before - I seriously doubt I'll be out of bed and ready to hike by the time you are getting started. I did 6+ today and my foot is screaming!

Ok here's the relevant question: is this worth extra credits? ;)

    January 19, 2014

    • Ninon

Can I get bonus credit for being the "walking wounded?"

      February 11

    • Isabelle

I can testify to that !

  • joyce

Rats, I forgot, I will be in Austin! Will my hiking there count?

    February 11

  • joyce

    Good question , Ann!

  • Ann S.

Are we supposed to sign up for this event even if we know we are not going to do the whole thing?

    February 11

  • Ninon

I will do what I can - I will walk as much as I can without putting myself back into my cast! I'm going to just sign up for one, but will try to do more.

    February 11

  • Sophie

So looking forward to this annual event!!!
