New River Biking / Stone Mtn. Hiking Trip

The New River Trail is about 2 1/2 - 3 hours northwest of the triangle. Let's leave in time to get to the starting point by 11:30, bike about an hour, stop for a picnic lunch and ride another hour or so.   We'll spend the night in Hillsville and head to Stone Mountain Park in the morning for 5-mile hike.  If you're not a hiker, you can stay and ride another section of the bike trail.

In addition. last year we topped off the trip with a visit to the Raffaldini Winery on the way home.

We will actually meet at the Austinville Trail Head which is 4-5 miles from Exit 24 of  I-77.  More directions to come later.

Once we know who wants to go, we can arrange carpooling and room sharing.

Feel free to email me if you have questions.

This sounds like a fun hike. What is the pace of the hike and level of experience required?

    May 21, 2014

    • Ann S.

The pace of the hike will be essentially whatever we need it to be. Definitely not fast Quite a few steps involved so we take it slow.

Teri- the first mile is straight up, but it has stairs and the view is worth it. After that, it's a piece of cake.

This is a great biking trail - my favorite! Wish I could go, but I'm leaving for the beach the next day. Have fun - looks like rain :(

Are you starting at the main trailhead for the park at Foster Falls at the old orphanage? If so, that address is: 176 Orphanage Rd., Max Meadows, VA. I've done this one three times in the past month - such a pretty trail. It is three hours from Raleigh.

If it's OK and the weather's good, I'd like to head down to Stone Mountain after the bike ride and meet up with you there on the 12th. They have some great hike-in campsites on Widow's Creek. I have a retreat coming up in Durham on the 13th so will probably stay two nights.

No problem. Saves the problem of figuring out who rooms with you. (Just kidding.)
