Bike the Columbia Trail, from Long Valley to High Bridge and back!

  • Columbia Trail

Schooleys Mountain Rd. & SR 24, Long Valley, NJ (map)

    40.784584 -74.779915

  • We will meet by the entrance to the trail.
  • We will be taking a scenic bike ride along the Columbia Trail, starting in Long Valley, riding about 12 miles out to High Bridge, and then returning 12 miles back to Long Valley.

    Pictures from last year: http://www.meetup.com/adventurers-237/photos/14122512

The trail is flat, hard packed gravel. It is recommended that you have a bike with heavier duty tires, and not road / racing tires. A mountain bike or Hybrid will work best.

We will be riding at a moderate pace. We won't be racing, but we won't be going at a snails pace either. We will stop along the trail to regroup, and take in the views.

This is a very scenic ride, and you can't get lost, even if you can't keep up. It's straight out, and straight back. We will also be passing a Clydesdale horse farm!

It is important that you have all the necessary tools, safety gear (helmet), spare tubes, patch kit, pump, in case you should get a flat along the way. Also make sure you have the proper clothing depending on the weather, as well as snacks & enough water. There is a bike shop around the corner, (Cycle Craft) if you should need any last minute bike supplies. You can also rent bikes there. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BIKE IS 100% READY BEFORE THE RIDE!!!  You should be able to maintain your own bike, fix a flat if necessary, as there is no guarantee that someone will be able to help you during the ride if people get split up.

We will have a 15 minute grace period, before taking off (We will hit the trail @ 11:00)

After the ride, we will be having lunch at the popular Long Valley Brew Pub:http://www.restaurantvillageatlongvalley.com/rest_home.php?restid=1 This is a very nice place, casual, great food and drinks. It's right down the road from the trail head, and is a popular stop for people after biking in the area.

The parking lot at the trail head, is very small, and will fill up quickly. There is a bank across the street, which is open on Saturdays, but they allow parking in the back of their parking lot ONLY (do not park elsewhere in their lot!). There is also a market next to the bank. The last time I was there on a Sat, it was closed, and people were using their parking lot too... Just make sure it's closed if you do. There is also a ball field, with a parking lot, just down the road, on the left, behind the church, before the trail head. Also, be careful with the directions... Follow the exit numbers. There are 2 signs for Schooleys Mountain road on the highway and one of them will take you no where near where you need to go.

NOTE: This ride is weather dependent!

    No Kids on this ride.

Please... There is NO need to RSVP NO!

Just logged in noticed the messages. Glad to see that some are still going. The reason I didn't completely delete the meetup, so that people can still communicate. I hope the trail conditions aren't as bad as I'm thinking!

Paul, Would it be possible for me to meet you guys in High Bridge? Don't know if I'm in shape for whole ride... Then maybe someone can give me a ride back to my car?

I would say 12:30 ish... I wasn't really timing it last time. We will hang in High bridge for about 20 minutes, before heading back.

OK people, I'm going to make a difficult decision and with great regret, cancel the ride. I think we will get breaks of nice weather, but I'm more concerned with the trail. Not everyone will have mountain bikes and I think the trail is going to be a sloppy mess. Less experienced bikers may have trouble in the muddy areas, especially near the horse farm, where the horses really tear up the path.

I called the local police. The trails are open but they could not comment on how muddy or not it was. The sun is due out in a bit and precipitation percentage goes down to 10% starting at 10AM until 2PM then goes up to 40%.
It will likely be messy at first so fat tires would be ok. Slower ride until it dries.
Paul let us know - El

Debby, that's my concern is the mud, especially near the horse farm, where the horses soften up the ground. I think people with hybrids may have trouble...

Paul-host- weather says rain stops around 5AM and temps go to 55 by start time. I'm not familiar with this trail but the precipitation would typically need to be quite intense to last on the trail. Maybe call the local police/parks office at 9 and post an update. I will leave around[masked]

Does anyone have any thoughts concerning the weather tomorrow, and the ride? As of early today and yesterday, they weren't calling for any rain in the Long Valley area, but I just checked again, and one site says 60% and another says 30%, but it sounds like even if it does rain, it will be very lite...
