Distance: 5 total miles (3-4 hours of hiking, pace will be relaxed)

Elevation gain: 500+ feet

This hike has many overlooks and views of the Catskills in the distance. We will travel from the Peterskill Park Office to the end of the trail near the main entrance to Minnewaska Park. From there we will walk back via the Awosting Carriageway past Awosting falls! This hike might be difficult for the little ones. There is an option to hike back after the first viewpoint if you don't want to complete the loop.

Along the way, we will see sharply tilted masses of rock, crevices and pinnacles that characterize the Shawangunk Mountains. This uplifted bedrock also shows us evidence of the last ice age, with glacial grooves and striations as the ice scoured across the land 10,000 years ago.

The ridgeline will afford jaw-dropping views of the Hudson Valley and some of the most famous climbing areas in the Gunks—a truly spectacular winter day hike!

If you can walk, you can snowshoe – it’s that easy! Get off the couch for a day outside and explore the breathtaking views and scenic beauty of Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve as winter transforms these special places into a snow covered wonderland.

Parking at the visitors center on the right on the way to Peterskill is free if you are coming from New Paltz. If you pass the hairpin turn, you've missed the center. It might be better to park there and then carpool over and split the parking fee between passengers. Just an idea...

Its seem unlikely we will have snow for the weekend, but if we do get lucky any type of winter boots or hiking boots are fine as long as they are not Uggs. If the snow is deep enough you will want a pair of gaiters as well.
