Just got back from being out of town for the holidays, now it's time to get back into water!!! I have been asked about kayaking in the winter, and it's not as cold as you might think, especially since you will be wearing a wetsuit and windbreaker. So here is the plan for the next Meet up for Jan 10 2009 (if it should rain then postpone for the following Saturday). If the weather is good, say around 60 degrees and no rain lets try this: Kayaking in the Elkhorn Slough (roughly 25 miles North of Monterey) This is a great place for first timers as well as people who have been here before. The last couple of times I've kayaked here, I saw a raft of at least 10-15 sea otters with in minutes of putting the kayak in the water. Of course saw the seals and lots of shorebirds and waterbirds. So bring a camera, you won't regret it (that is only if you don't drop it in the water- that has happened!!!:( Meet at my place at 9:00am get to know people and set up carpools
10:00am be on the road and get to Elk Horn Slough
11:20am arrive at kayak rental place Monterey Bay Kayaks, 2390 Hwy 1
12:00pm get suited up and in the water and start adventuring, taking pictures and enjoying the views. Usually the sea otters will be first to be seen unless the seals come in for a closer look...We then will head deeper into the slough to see where the seals haul out and rest on the beach, go into the narrow tidal creeks and take breaks for pictures and snacks.
Usually 2-4 hours is good gage of time to see the area, so be patient, have fun and enjoy the great outdoors... After kayaking we can all regroup and get some warm food nearby and get to know eachother soe more and go over what might be our next meet up: road bike ride, mountain bike ride, skiing....

What to bring: Kayak rental (includes wet suit, paddle, kayak- sit on top, wind breaker) $25
water bottle and energy bars or snack food
Teva's, aqua socks any type of foot ware you wont mind getting wet or drys off quick
extra change of clothes
bathing suit to wear under wetsuit
cap to keep head warm or glare from your eyes
fleece sweat shirt
camera (one that floats is always good) or bring a waterproof case
binoculars
sunscreen just in case
beach towel
some money for food or water
If you have your own kayak I can fit one other besides mine. If you have any questions please drop me an email... See you out there...
