Planning your travel on a budget series #Series #6/13 - Africa & SE Asia

Do you dream of traveling to various places but the costs always delivers
a knockout blow to your plans. Do you want to plan your own low cost trips
but you aren't sure where to start?

As someone who has traveled to many parts of the world, I am surprised
that others only talk about wanting to do a trip and then never get it
started, or do a trip and complain about how expensive it was and when I
talk to them I am astounded by how much money they spent. After talking to
a few of you and hoping that one of the travel meetups would cover this,
but then not seeing anyone cover it, I've decided to put together a short
series to help you plan your own cool trips.
The combination of SE Asia & Africa may seem unusual, but my resource people Cathy & Ilene for the Q&A
have traveled/lived in both regions.

While my background has primarily been bicycling or backpack/hiking in
these areas, I will invite people who have done more traditional
travel in these areas to be resources.

We will keep the total group size for the planning/network/Q&A meetings
on the low side at 15-30 people and use a
combination of potlucks and low cost restuarants for the meetings. I will try to hold them in a variety
of locations in Seattle, the north end and the east side. To try
and get through this before my work travel and other commitments ramp up,
I will schedule more than one a week for the first few months and monthly after
that.

I will re-use the handouts that I made for previous presentations so don't
be surprised if some of them look like something you saw somewhere else.
I will post most of the information in the "files" section for this group,
that way if you can't make a session, you can still get the information.

These are not a replacement for a travel agent or travel seminars but are
a quick overview to give you the basic knowledge you need to be able to
plan a successful trip without breaking the bank. Generally when I travel
internationally with groups of my friends, we usually budget airfare plus $30-$50 per day
which covers our food, lodging, transportation, sight seeing, etc. I've done some trips in Western Europe at
less than half that by getting creative.
For this one Anahita will answer your Iran Questions, I am still trying to get others.

The initial plan is to have a series to cover the globe:

Series #1 - Basic Low Cost Trip Planning approaches and Tools.
Series #2 - Northern/Western Europe (Germany, Scandanavia and West, the
Alps and north)
Series #3 - Central and Eastern Europe (Estonia and south to the Black
Sea, east of Germany)
Series #4 - Southern Europe (south of the Alps)
Series #5 - Asia Minor/Middle East
Series #6 - SE Asia/Central Asia (India to but not including China) Series
#7 - Eastern Asia (China, Tiawan, the Koreas, Japan)
Series #8 - Russia (Eurasia)
Series #9 - The Stans
Series #10 - North America (Canada, US, Mexico)
Series #11 - Central America & Carribean (Southern Mexico, Guatemala,
Belize, Costa Rica, etc.)
Series #12 - South America
Series #13 - Africa
Series #14 - South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand & Antartica - from hot
to cold

The format would be a potluck, a quick overview (Culture, languages,
currency, rough cost examples, key attractions, strange facts) with more
details from someone who has traveled to that area; then a breakout for
sub areas trip planning. While I have traveled in areas 2-11, others in
the group have traveled more or to different areas.
If you are willing to be a resource for one of the areas because you grew
up there, lived there, traveled there extensively, let me know and we
should be able to work you in.
