Kurt Elling - jazz singer

Hello fellow aficionados:

If you like jazz, you are in for a treat. I saw Mr. Elling years ago when he just popped into a place in New York called "The Rodeo Bar & Grill." Yup. Not your typical venue. I was there to hear some other band and he stopped by and sang a few songs. Totally blew me away. I have no memory of the band that played afterwards, whether I liked them, or how I got home that night.

Recently I casually asked a friend (who's always plugged into the jazz scene) if he knew if Kurt Elling ever played in Denver. Well, he got back to me and let me know he's playing two nights at Dazzle. If you can't make it on the 13th, there's always the 12th. We're doing the early set, but he does two sets each night:

6:30 - 7:45

8:30 - 9:45

If it's sold out (as I expect it will be), you won't be able to stick around for the 2nd set, but if we're lucky, perhaps we will.

OK. Enough sales pitch. Come join me if you dare (it's not cheap):

$35 + $1.50 service fee (apparently everyone charges for service these days):

I'll be going from work downtown to Dazzle but will have free time before. Thinking of getting hard cider at Katie Mullins on 16th st. Anyone want to join me around 4-4:30? I need a ride to light rail station after the early show

Elling's show Tuesday night was great. No performance of "Nature Boy" (maybe they did it in 6:30 show), but great rendition of "Golden Girl". It had a 7/8 meter B-section that was a thing of beauty. And every time it went back from b-section to A-section 4/4, it made it swing so hard. Killer.

If you're going to the Irish Snug, what time will you be there? I'll be there around 9-ish

    February 12, 2013

    • Patrick D

Hi Elynne, still planning on being there. I checked the Irish Snug website, and it looks like the group will start playing at 8 PM. Will try to make it there by 8:30 PM. I will send you my cell phone # via Email, so we can connect once we get there. Look forward to checking out Gypsy Swing Revue !

Are we going to get a group table? It would be nice as I am going solo.

    February 11, 2013

    • aloysius

Michelle - I will try and get there early and see if I can save some seats/tables. As I said, Dazzle is pretty small, so I'm sure you'll find us. Heck if there are really 33 of us going, it will be hard to miss us. Plus you have my cellphone number. AND, just for you, I'm going to bring my multi-colored Turkish hat (which I may even wear, but just as likely will have sitting in front of me at the table).

      See ya Wednesday.

It appears Dazzle messed up (or maybe somehow I did), and got me down for Tuesday night 8:30 show. So I guess no carpool for me. But on March 26 Edward Simon, a pianist friend from Venezuela, is appearing at Lone Tree Performance Cntr with John Patitucci and Brian Blade. All 3 are internationally known jazz artists. Maybe we can get some Boulder folks together to carpool down for that.

Does anyone want to carpool? It's the right thing to do! I am in Boulder

I'm hoping there'll be lots of carpooling.Unfortunately I'll be heading down very early (with a friend) to do some other things in Denver beforehand.

Laine, are you going to the show?

    Oh, no ticket.

Anyone from Boulder area going to the late show on Tuesday night and want to carpool?

Also-"Gypsy Swing Revue is a jazz ensemble that carries on the tradition of Gypsy Jazz created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli during the 1930's Paris jazz scene. Their Swinging Jazz of the 30's and 40's plus a cross-section of songs from the modern Gypsy Jazz repertoire is created with two acoustic guitars, upright bass, and violin. Irish Snug. No cover. Drink specials."

Looks like Kurt Elling's shows are ALL sold out, according to their website.

Elynne, are you still going to the Irish Snug location, to see Gypsy Swing Revue ?

      Sounds like a good alternative.

There's also Gypsy Jazz that night! At the Irish Snug. Anyone up for both?

    February 8, 2013

  • aloysius

It appears that ALL Kurt Elling's shows (both times, both dates) are sold out. If you don't have a ticket, well I guess you'll have to scalp one...

Well my partner kept me waiting too long to find out if she could go. I anyone has two tickets and needs to cancel out. Let me know. I could buy them from you. I'd go to any of the 4 shows Tues or Wed

    February 4, 2013

  • Denise T.

tickets are all sold out for this show.

    January 31, 2013

  • Laine L.

Looks like last week I inadvertently got a ticket for the 9:30 show. Can't verify that right now because my computer freaked out and erased some messages, including the ticket confirmation, which I hadn't yet printed out. Probably too late now to switch them, since the 6:30 is sold out.

    January 29, 2013

    • aloysius

I assume you mean 8:30 (and if not, then I'm informing you that the 2nd show is at 8:30, not 9:30 - so don't show up at 9:30, cause you'll have missed most of the set by then...that would be a shame :). Perhaps others who want to go but didn't get tickets in time can go at 8:30 too (and indicate it here in the comments). Who knows, many things are possible.

      January 30, 2013

  • aloysius

It appears Mr. Elling's Wednesday show at 6:30 has sold out and is no longer appearing for purchase on Dazzle's site. Part of me wants to encourage you to go see him on Tuesday. Part thinks perhaps you should go to the later show on Wednesday (but then we won't be able to hang around and catch the 2nd set cause it too may sell out). Ah well. So it goes. Do what you think best. Perhaps some of the group will go out for a drink or a bite after the show and those going to the later show could join us before they go. Or something like that. It's all very complicated. We will do what we can to make everyone happy (which isn't much, I'm afraid).

Great, I live nr Ideal Mkt. With traffic, we should plan for at least an hour to get there and park

I listen to Jazz all the time, and I'm very familiar with Kurt Elling.
I would love to join you for this, but it is a little out of my price range. I would really splurge tho, for Toots Thielmans. An amazing Jazz Harmonica player. Let me know if you ever hear about him in the area.

    January 24, 2013

  • Herschel

Not sure yet if I can make this but Kurt is the best jazz singer anywhere. Saw him at Soiled Dove and like Al was blown away. If I go I'll be coming from Boulder.

    Carpool from Boulder area anyone?

    January 23, 2013

I have seen Kurt twice on Jazz cruises and really enjoy him, unfortunately I'll be out of town when he's here. I am a regular at Dazzle so would welcome more jazz meetups!
