This is a real event, not an April Fools joke. Mayhem Gulch is a real trail head. It is located about 9 miles up Clear Creek Canyon, measuring from the intersection of Hwy 93 and Hwy 6.
I checked out this new trail (for me) today. I think it is worthy of a group hike. The trail is about 5 miles round trip and about 1000 vertical feet. If you have not hiked enough to know how hard that is for you, then you should not do this.
The first 1.5 miles are a steady climb on a smooth trail with about a 10 percent grade, winding through junipers and sagebrush up the side of the canyon. The hike is warm and sunny, being on a south exposure. There are basically no level or downhill sections in this 1.5 miles. The rest of the hike is easier, and gets more forested with pines mixing in with the junipers on more northerly exposures.
Dogs must be on leash at all times, regardless of how well behaved they are. This is very strictly enforced here.
After the hike I am going to check out the Cannonball Creek Brewing Company just north of Golden. It doesn't open until 3 PM, so I didn't get inside after the exploratory hike today. Anyone is welcome to join me.
