Hike in Clear Creek Canyon west of Golden

This is a real event, not an April Fools joke.  Mayhem Gulch is a real trail head.  It is located about 9 miles up Clear Creek Canyon, measuring from the intersection of Hwy 93 and Hwy 6.

I checked out this new trail (for me) today.  I think it is worthy of a group hike.  The trail is about 5 miles round trip and about 1000 vertical feet.  If you have not hiked enough to know how hard that is for you, then you should not do this.

The first 1.5 miles are a steady climb on a smooth trail with about a 10 percent grade, winding through junipers and sagebrush up the side of the canyon.  The hike is warm and sunny, being on a south exposure.   There are basically no level or downhill sections in this 1.5 miles.  The rest of the hike is easier, and gets more forested with pines mixing in with the junipers on more northerly exposures.

Dogs must be on leash at all times, regardless of how well behaved they are.  This is very strictly enforced here.

After the hike I am going to check out the Cannonball Creek Brewing Company just north of Golden.  It doesn't open until 3 PM, so I didn't get inside after the exploratory hike today.  Anyone is welcome to join me.

I am thinking of taking the day off tomorrow, but hate to cancel at the last minute. If I know someone on the wait list still wants to go, I'll give up my place. I'll check back in the a.m., so let me know if you want in and I'll change my RSVP to no.

Hey Folks, I'm on the "waitlist" like several others. Please let us know if you can't make it for any reason.
Glenn--Is there really a limit here?

On the exploratory hike, I spoke with the ranger for the area. The Jeffco open space is still trying to figure out how they will deal with group hikes. The ranger knew about meetups and told me there is currently no rule limiting size. I want to act diplomatically and responsibly to help give a good impression (which I firmly believe we deserve). It is not good for our people, for other people hiking, for the trail, for the parking, etc. when a huge group converges on a trail. I hope to have somewhere in the 20 to 25 range actually on the hike. Given the typical no show rates, I felt limiting rsvp's to 30 would get close to this target.
