Easy Hike in RMNP, New Members Especially Welcome

If the weather is bad, I will still be at the Stone Cup at 11 AM.  A possible bad weather alternative would be the Eagle Wind loop at Rabbit Mountain.  This is an easy trail near Lyons.

I'd like to do a hike in RMNP that has a very easy option and also a couple of moderate options for those who wish.  The basic hike (walk) is up a trail paralleling the Upper Beaver Meadow road and back down the road itself.  The road is still closed to vehicles for the winter so we won't have to dodge cars.  The total distance of this very easy option is 2.5 to 3 miles, with less than 500 feet of elevation.  From the trail head at the end of the road, there is a one mile loop and another 3 mile loop.  I expect the 3 mile loop will have fairly heavy snow and possibly the 1 mile loop as well.

Remember that no dogs are allowed on trails in the National Park.  Please leave your dog at home.

So, if you want an easy walk up the trail followed by a nice social hangout in a pretty mountain spot, you are covered.  If you want to venture upward into snow you are covered as well.

I was in the park on Easter Sunday, and there was still 2 - 3 feet of snow in the north slope woods at 8000 - 8500 feet elevation.  I did not have snow shoes or traction devices and made it through, but I did post hole 10 or 12 times.

I am going to add in from the wait list after the first 15 signups.  If you have attended less than 2 grey wolves events then I promise to move you from the wait list to yes status.  I will move others as well, and I will try to keep the total below 30 to make for a higher quality experience.

If you have a park pass, please bring it.  I expect to be back in Lyons about 4 - 5 PM.  I will go to Oscal Blues in Lyons after the hike.  You are all welcome to join me.

I would love to get something going too. I can't lead anything until the second weekend in June. I may or may not be able to come to something before that since my May just got booked solid.

Easy to me means that you start the season building up to altitude hikes. I think that I like starting out on flat terrain and going farther and then gentle inclines building up to miles walked etc. Hope we can get something together. I think that the work out will be there if you need to build up to more. I dont' need to get my heart rate up to the target range for an entire hike. I like to enjoy the scenery like Adrianne. If I want an aerobic workout I will go to the gym, ride my bike and/or take a brisk long walk. Thanks for asking.

Sorry Glenn, decided to catch up on things at home that I have been putting off, since this weather doesn't compel me to be in the great outdoors. You guys have FUN!

I am going to drop out of the hike as the weather looks too ominous. I apologize for waiting so long to cancel and hope someone else can take the spot. Looking forward to a good beginner hike.

I am happy to go in any kind of weather, but not when I'm fighting a fever. ::sigh::

The weather sounds ominous, like it will be an indoor day. Didn't want to wait until the last minute so someone else who doesn't mind the weather can go instead.

I hike rabbit mountain every week. Was looking forward to something in the park. I really miss the sleepy lion trail in button rock.

I am one! Keep me in mind if you know of any easier hikes. I am not interested in competitive hiking. I like the exercise but don't have a need to climb the highest or the hardest. :0)

There have been some comments in appreciation of easy hikes. I would encourage any of you who would like to see more easy hikes to consider leading an easy hike yourself. You don't need to be an organizer to host an event.

Glenn, I would enjoy hosting regular hikes, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes or do something that's against the rules. Are there any rules?

I too am inexperienced with hosting hiles nor where a lot of the easy hikes are, but am interested in doing them!!

Darn. Didn't see this soon enough. I don't get on too many group hikes since I prefer long leisurely hikes to marathons to the top. Thanks for doing this.

hey there - here's another voice for easier & inviting new folks!! Thanks for the efforts!!! (Is it hard to find easier hikes? It seems like once you head west you are heading straight up! :)) Hope to join you & meet you-all soon.

It's very hard to find easy hikes. Hopefully, the strong popularity of this easy hike will inspire the leaders of this group to plan more easier hikes...at least for now (in the beginning of the season).

I would love to do this hike with you however I have something booked that day. I think it is awesome you are focusing on people like me who are new to the meetup scene and also who need to break back into hiking at altitude. Thank you!
