If the weather is bad, I will still be at the Stone Cup at 11 AM. A possible bad weather alternative would be the Eagle Wind loop at Rabbit Mountain. This is an easy trail near Lyons.
I'd like to do a hike in RMNP that has a very easy option and also a couple of moderate options for those who wish. The basic hike (walk) is up a trail paralleling the Upper Beaver Meadow road and back down the road itself. The road is still closed to vehicles for the winter so we won't have to dodge cars. The total distance of this very easy option is 2.5 to 3 miles, with less than 500 feet of elevation. From the trail head at the end of the road, there is a one mile loop and another 3 mile loop. I expect the 3 mile loop will have fairly heavy snow and possibly the 1 mile loop as well.
Remember that no dogs are allowed on trails in the National Park. Please leave your dog at home.
So, if you want an easy walk up the trail followed by a nice social hangout in a pretty mountain spot, you are covered. If you want to venture upward into snow you are covered as well.
I was in the park on Easter Sunday, and there was still 2 - 3 feet of snow in the north slope woods at 8000 - 8500 feet elevation. I did not have snow shoes or traction devices and made it through, but I did post hole 10 or 12 times.
I am going to add in from the wait list after the first 15 signups. If you have attended less than 2 grey wolves events then I promise to move you from the wait list to yes status. I will move others as well, and I will try to keep the total below 30 to make for a higher quality experience.
If you have a park pass, please bring it. I expect to be back in Lyons about 4 - 5 PM. I will go to Oscal Blues in Lyons after the hike. You are all welcome to join me.
