The Withlacoochee South flows north, rising out of the Green Swamp and exiting a hundred miles later into the Gulf Of Mexico about twenty miles west of Dunnellon. During its hundred miles, the river drains 2,090 sq miles of land. The Indian name means "small big water". It was designated the Outstanding Florida Water in 1989.

This  upper section of The Withlacoochee S  is very scenic with winding turns, dark red tannic flow and beautiful tree lined banks. This section is characterized by relatively high banks. The river is considerably narrower than the middle and Lower Sections, with sizeable banks on both sides of the river. Most of the river is lined with oaks and cypress, with occasional stands of pines. The banks are less swampy than the rest of the river.

We will be paddling 8+/- miles of easy downstream paddling.

Let me save you all some time. It is summer and this is Fl. , the weather forecast for the next 5 months is "50% chance of thunder showers." Previous evening campfire report. Continuing where we left off at the campfire the previous evening John B. and myself delved deeper into the potential untold events that are likely to affect us during the next hundred years. We determined that they are all manageable and we would continue paddling and camping on a weekly basis. The paddling day was wonderful as we put in at Hwy 50 on our journey to Silver Lake Rec area. The water was a little low which made it very clear and we could view the sand bottom and avoid the lime stone. Again an abundance of bird life probably some gator company and a couple of small fishing boats inquiring of us if we were tired of rowing.

I made the best of the day by myself. Paddled up river and the lake. Even got to experiment some with my kayak sail. Made the return trip quite a bit easier.

Third and final day..down to two. The dynamic duo; Peter and myself enjoyed this section with perfect weather and beautiful scenery. Was a great finish to our 3 day trip. The WithS is a great river and scenic no matter what level of water but I enjoy the scenery at its lowest. Will be back to do the WithS at any level, a remarkable waterway. Thanks to my constant and reliable paddle partner for the company.
