Worth the effort, this half-day hike through wide open country (mostly farmland) offers great views round the Hutt valley, Wellington and Porirua harbours and towards the South Island.
What we'll be doing
We'll meet at the Cannons Creek Lake Reserve entrance to Belmont Regional Park, walk past the lakes, then climb to meet the top end of Takapu Road at the substation, passing the Maara Roa forest restoration project on the way. We'll then continue up the Takapu ridge to intersect with Puke Ariki between Belmont Trig and Cannons Head, we'll turn left onto Puke Ariki and follow the open ridge towards Cannons Head. The track runs further along the ridge top before turning left, leaving Puke Ariki to head back down to Cannons Creek.
6/10 - 10km Walk. Strenuous grade up for an hour, then along the tops and back down, around 3 hours walking, plus time for stops.
3hrs walking. Plus approx 30 mins for breaks.
What to bring
Wind and waterproof clothing, strong footwear, snack food and lunch and plenty to drink.
The 12.14 train from Wellington to Porirua. The #220 bus from Porirua stops opposite the Cannons Creek shops, which are just before the Lakes Reserve.
If you're driving all the way, you can park in the Cannons Creek shopping centre car park. Or you could park in the Porirua station main car park, and get the bus from there.
This event will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions being forecast.
