This awesome bush walk follows the seldom explored Norbett's Creek track within Kaitoke regional park. The former hunters track takes us through native Podocarp and Beech forest to views over the Hutt valley and south to Wellington harbour. After taking in the views we head down, cross a stream and follow the river that brings us back to the start - Nearby are Rivendale and a choice of picnic area where you can enjoy lunch, but of course not before trying out Kaitoke's swing bridge.
Kaitoke regional park is only 45 minutes north of Wellington City, this spectacular covers 2860 hectares in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges. Steep, bush-clad hills, the Hutt River gorge and centuries-old rata, rimu and beech forest feature in this magnificent natural setting.
Difficulty: 6/10. There is a very steep uphill section at the beginning before the track levels off to a gradual climb for the first hour or so. We descend down a service road and back along the river to the swing bridge. Please note there are two stream crossings and your feet will probably get a little wet.
What to bring: sturdy shoes, food and water. We will be crossing a stream in which you may get your feet wet - so bring extra shoes or socks to leave in car in case.
Time: 2.5 hours of walking. While there will be stops along the way, we will have lunch back at the car park at the end of the walk.
How to get there: To get to Kaitoke, follow the SH2 past Upper Hutt. Turn left off SH2 at Waterworks Road, 12km north of Upper Hutt. This is not the Te Marua entrance but a further 5-10 minutes drive north. The park entrance is 1km from the highway. We will meet in the swing-bridge car park. To get there drive past the rangers office, across the one lane bridge, then follow the road. The swing-bridge car park is off to the left. There is no public transport option to this walk, so get together and rideshare if you can.
