Give Spearfishing a go

All those closet sea hunters, this is the event for you. Dare to go native, take a spear and hunt your own food.  Don't worry it will not quite be jumping from the rocks as the picture suggests :-). The waters around Wellington are rich of life and goodness.

What to expect:

We will meet at the parking area in at the end of Owhiro Parade at 3.00pm. We will then have 2 hours of spearfishing, freediving and possibly a fish or 2 to take home. We will aim to get some paua regardless. You will be given tips on species identification, do's, dont's, etc.  This is not a course but an excursion. There will be opportunities to dive to 12m.

Remember if you need to hire gear Dive Wellington will provide special rates for members, just call in or phone Dave, Paula or Bart on 939 3483. Alternatively Claire will always give you a great deal at Dive & Ski HQ Petone, 568 5028. You may be able to arrange for a city pickup and dropoff of the hire gear rather than from Petone.  Please organise gear hire at least one day before the event.

IMPORTANT: It is essential that you can snorkel without fear of the ocean.  Must be able to swim.  No other experience required.

Difficulty Rating:

Cost:

$15 cash on the day to cover logisitcs, and use of spearguns, plus any extra equipment hire (where applicable)

What to bring:

Snorkel Gear - Wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, weight belt

Catch Bag if you have one

Something to drink

Location: Meet at Parking Area at end of Owhiro Parade.  There everybody will get into Raymond's 4WD to drive to the dive site. Cars can be left in the parking area.

Weather: This event is weather dependent and date or location can be changed at relatively short notice.  Keep an eye on the comments.

So much fun! Good to get back in the water and to have a go with a spear gun. Raymond was helpful with showing us where good spots were for paua and fish and showed us how to to use the guns. He even caught enough fish for us all :)

Sorry guys, conditions changed rapidly over night! South coast is now the site so meet at the quarry carpark at 2.30pm as per the original plan.

I have changed the location to Makara beach, look for my red ute DQQ599. Bring some shoes or boots that you can wear along the beach on stones as we may have a walk to the site. Changed site because the south coast will not be suitable tomorrow. You can contact me on[masked], but there is limited coverage at Makara.

What wetsuits are people wearing? I have a 3 mil but think I might have to hire a thicker one?

    May 24, 2013

    • Raymond M.

      Yes, you'll want a 7mm wetsuit.

I wished that worked, but often you have to chase them! Bonus might be swimming with the seals if we can go to Sinclair Head.
