AW Classic: Point Howard - Eastbourne Hills Adventure!

What we're doing
The start is at Point Howard, just past Seaview and on the way to Eastbourne. There is a bus stop there, a  carpark and toilets. We'll meet in the large carpark on the seaside of the Point.

We start off with an easy, flat walk along Marine Drive until we get to Lowry Bay (5 mins). In Lowry Bay its an easy walk up Cheviot Road to the start of the bush track. The track goes uphill for about an hour through native bush, coming out at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill Road - jaw dropping views over Wellington Harbour from here!

Then we follow the Main Ridge Track to Mt Lowry trig, (up and down a bit) and then continuing along the ridge line track about an hour before dropping down to the Eastbourne Village and The Beach Cafe or the local pub for coffee/beer/wine/food.

We should be at the Village by about 1:30 - 2:30pm. People have the option of either jumping on a bus back to their cars at Point Howard.

HOW TO GET THERE

BUS: Take the 83 bus that leaves Courtney Place. This bus goes through Petone and Lower Hutt Queensgate before arriving at Point Howard stop - press the exit bell as you go past the Seaview Marina.

CAR: It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the start point from Wgtn City. There's a big car park at Pt Howard.

HOW TO GET BACK TO START

1) BUS BACK FROM EASTBOURNE: This is only a 5 minute bus trip. Buses go at 2:25, 2:45, 3:25, 3:45, 4:45. (you can stay on the bus and go all the way back to Wgtn City if you like - about a 45 minute trip)

2) CAR SHUTTLE: Get a friend to leave their car close to the Eastbourne shops - so you can drive back to the start point

3) WALK: It'll take you about 30 minutes, flat walk along the waterfront to get back to the start.

PLEASE NOTE: The Ridgeline track is not used much so it's a bit of an adventure! It can be slippery and there are often fallen trees to climb over or under, plus the occasional bum-slide if you don't watch where you're going!

Difficulty: 5/10: moderate walk, moderate level of fitness required - see FAQ

Time 3-4 hours including breaks

What To Bring: Some snacks and plenty to drink. Sturdy footwear and layers of clothing which you can peel off as you get hot and put on again as you cool.

This event will be postponed if there are adverse weather conditions forecast

Sorry guys Helen and I can't do the Sunday.

    July 8, 2013

  • Karl S.

Ok cool, would it be simpler to change the event back to the original date then and not penalise those who don't come? since it sounds like half are attending anyway, Anyway, see you soon.

The walk is now set for Sunday July 21. Unless anyone would e interested in doing it tomorrow? Let me know.

    July 6, 2013

  • Callum

I'm choosing to hold off and postpone the walk today. My apologies if you're already prepped and ready to go.

Though the rain hasn't yet made it into Eastbourne, the wind is incredibly fierce. Ill be in the area anyway, if anyone is really keen on a storm walk..

  • Callum

Hi guys, at the moment I'm holding out for a more accurate weather forecast for tomorrow. At this stage, the walk will most likely go ahead, but I will give the word by 7.30pm tonight. Hope you guys don't mind a bit of wet!

Check back here tomorrow morning for a final decision, which I'll have up before 8am (the morning light doesn't hit eastbourne til quite late!)

    - Onward -

Looking less likely now. Forecast rain with severe gales expected to evening tomorrow. Unfortunately with Eastbourne, severe weather (especially recent events) can lead to road closure, and potentially being stranded.

      July 5, 2013

  • Lois H.

I've just freed up a spot for the Eastbourne walk tomorrow. Thought I did it last night, apologies for the short notice.

    Sounds good!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
