This is a recon mission. Please only come if you're ready for adventure as this is the first time hosting this one! The plan is to explore the tracks which means it is likely we'll be stopping and starting and discussing the track along the way.
High cliffs, spectacular views, a rugged coastline, a historic pa site, concrete bunkers are all part of the Makara track experience. Makara Track climbs past an ancient maori pa site and the remains of World War II gun emplacements. It then drops down to the rocky and driftwood strewn beach.
We will meet at the carpark at the end of the Makara beach road at 10.30am and walk the trek from there.
How to get there: Makara Track begins and ends at Makara Beach, 16 km north of Wellington at the end of Makara Road which runs from the south end of Karori Road.
Please use the message board below to arrange car pooling/lifts as there are no buses to the beach. The No. 3 will get you to the start of the Makara Road in South Karori, a good place to get picked up.
Difficulty 5/10 There is a steep section to start with for the first half an hour before we hit the ridge and the gun emplacements, the track is fairly narrow and close to the edge but has awesome views.

What to bring. Wind and waterproof outer, warm clothing - layers, something for lunch, water, sturdy shoes.
Time. 3 hours or so - depending on how long you want to take to explore the gun emplacements. Once at the beach it is straightforward to make your way back along the coast to the car park. It's worth mentioning that the walk back along the beach will be over loose pebbles, stones and driftwood. Depending on the time of high tide the walk may be reversed - that is, starting with the beach walk.
This event will be postponed if the weather forecast is too bad as the cliffs are exposed.
Beautiful walk with incredible views. Thanks everyone for coming I had a great day with you all :-)

A great day, a great walk, fantastic weather and beautiful views [even if I was staring at my feet a lot over the rocks!]. Thanks for organising this Erin.

I don't mind stopping in town to give anyone needing a ride a lift. Just need to know where's a good spot for pickup.
