The Plan
Enjoy a scenic walk starting from the Zoo to Houghton Bay!
The planned route is part of the Southern Walkway, which winds its way along past the hyenas enclosure, and will be partly suburban and partly on gravel tracks so bring good walking shoes.
We depart 1.00pm and walk over Mt Albert with views of Wellington airport, Lyall Bay, Pencarrow, Baring Head and Cook Strait.
Please bring afternoon tea snacks to share.
Walk and afternoon tea should be finished by 4.30pm.
Bus back to the zoo, round trip completed.
What to bring:
Bring layers of warm clothes, water, afternoon tea munchies
Difficulty: 3/10
Note
This is a nice leisurely walk in town with nice views (that's Wellington for you) hosted by a local. It is fairly exposed and may be cancelled in bad weather.
Decision to be made by 10.00am on the day. Check this site for updates.
This meetup was rated with a difficulty level of 3, but there were actually some steep, scrambly bits where the path was covered by loose dirt on the Te Raekaihau section that I would have thought would warrant a higher rating. Having said that, I really enjoyed the walk and the variety of scenery it affords, from stunning views of the harbour and coast to cool hushed bush. And at the end a lovely afternoon tea in the hospitable host's home.
