Rimutaka New Years Excursion

At a loose end over the New Year? Then join AW on a camping and hiking adventure in the Rimataka ranges!
The Plan:
Starting outside the Wellington railway station at 8:00am we will catch the Wairarapa train 8:25am to Maymorn arriving at 9:05am. We will then walk from Maymorn station to the Kaitoke kart track.(www.gw.govt.nz/tunnel-gully) From Kaitoke kart track we will follow the Rimutaka rail trail to the summit (www.gw.govt.nz/rimutata-rail-tril).
At the summit we will camp for a night of New Year merriment and festivities. The next day we will walk to cross creek and on to Featherston. From Featherston we will catch the train from the railway station at 5:26pm, back to Wellington railway station.
Maymorn to Kaitoke 2hrs
Kaitoke to Summit 2.5hrs
Summit to Cross Creek 2hrs
Cross Creek to featherston 2.5hrs
We are walking on an old railway line so its flat walking and there will be lots of stops along the way to take in the history as we ago.

Costs:
$24.00 for the train tickets, to be purchased at the respective train stations.
What to Bring:
A tent, sleeping blanket, appropriate footwear, wet weather gear and warm clothing, cooking utensils, food and water.
Postponement:
Event is dependent on weather. Will be cancelled if weather is poor.

Hi all, Im looking forward to this trip just hope we have good weather.
I will have a small cooker with me,some may have a cooker too .
(let us know if you have a cooker you are taking, we could share)
There is flushing toilets at the top (summit) and water, but please bring some drinking water with you.
There are some rivers on the way, bring your toggs just in case if its hot...like christmas day.December 27

Hi all. Assuming the weather is good enough to go, it might make sense to do a bit of coordination. I've got one of those cheap portable stoves, would be willing to bring that for communual use if someone else wanted to bring a spare gas bottle.
Is there any water near the camp?

Hi Susanne, I am taking my small camping cooker, i will just bring an extra bottle of gas, but I think they will be different bottle for your stove, i was trying to travel lite. there is flushing toilet at the summit, yes water there, but bring some drinking water.

Is the train coming back from the holiday timetable?
There are only 2 trains coming back to welly on the 1st. One morning and one evening.December 14
