I have a new role in the Charity's Digital team - as a Content Strategist. I've been a cancer researcher, science writer, science communication manager, and web manager, and believe that content is powerful, complex and inspirational. At Cancer Research UK our content must support those with cancer; help people spot the early symptoms of cancer so that treatment is more successful; enable us to recruit the best scientists and clinicians, allow them to access funding, and showcase their research; help GPs diagnose cancer earlier to reduce deaths from the disease; recruit and retain our amazing supporters who raise hundreds of millions of pounds every year; and position us as the evidence based information leader for cancer with the media and policy makers. It's a complex challenge but one which needs content strategy. And I am a new content strategist who wants to learn from the experts and other organisations.
Network and learn - I know the challenges we face at CR-UK are not unique and we can learn from others who are willing to share their experiences. Fresh perspectives and ideas, ways of working and tools of the trade.
As the Digital Content Strategy lead at Cancer Research UK, I'm part of a team working to unify our websites on to a single domain and under a single architecture, and to make our content useful and useable across web, mobile and tablet.
