Agile Indy - Scrum Series (Part 2 - Estimating and Planning)

Abstract:

Are you new to Scrum?  Have you heard of Scrum and have a high level understanding, but would like to see it in action?  This three part series will give you the chance to join a Scrum team and find out first hand how Scrum really works.  In each part we will cover one aspect of Scrum and then put that knowledge into practice giving everyone hands on experience as part of a Scrum team.

In Part 1 of the series we built a product backlog.  The next step in scrum is estimating and planning.  In Part 2 of the series we will talk about this process and the role the ScrumMaster and Team play in this process.  We will then once again break into teams and practice what we learned by estimating the backlogs we produced last month and then starting to plan our release/sprints.

Agenda:

5:30pm: Doors open - Registration, Networking, Food

6:00pm: Welcome and Intro (Matt Block/Aaron Kopel)

6:15pm: Agile Principle #6 (Philip Davis)

6:30pm: Scrum Overview (Aaron Kopel)

6:45pm: Estimating and Planning (Scotty Bevill)

7:15pm: Exercise: Estimate the Product Backlog, Plan your Release

7:45pm: Wrap-up, Raffle (Matt Block/Aaron Kopel)

Very knowledgable and thought provoking presenter. The exercise was a good way to demonstrate the difficulty of new teams working together (especially when estimating stories) and allowed us to get to know each other a little bit better. Jimmy John rocks and I've got a few 30 year old college books if we need more raffle prizes -------unfortunately only in English!

    Great presentations.
Would have been better if each break-out group was led/overseen by an Agile/Scrum expert. No one in my group really had an idea about how to play Planning Poker correctly.

Ken, unfortunately we have yet to find a sponsor generous enough to spring for sushi...if you know of one I'd be more than happy to coordinate (even though I prefer my food be cooked).

However, I was getting the vibe that pizza was getting old so thought we would mix things up a bit this month with Jimmy John's! We're open to suggestions for future meetings as well! If you can get your company to sponsor the food we will let you pick it.

Matt, who needs pizza? Knowledge is the food of the soul. However, if a good sushi is being served...

I hear rumors that the food may be something other than pizza this time!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
