Assault on Neversink Mtn - The 2014 light bob campaign begins here (hike 1 of 6)

A bit of history: "Light Bob" was a nickname for light infantry troops that originated in the 18th century. Light infantry were highly mobile troops that didn't fight in the standard line formations used in 18th century battle. Instead, they were used as skirmishers and scouts, and were the predecessors to today's Special Forces.

What is this all about:  This is a multilevel fitness hike with a historic theme. Take this opportunity to test yourself. Review the information below and join the company that best fits your ability (you can also move between companies during the hike).

Additional information:  For those interested in tracking their accomplishments, we will be keeping a running tally of points for the entire campaign. Completing a section of a hike earns you points, carrying a weighted pack earns points (packs weighed at beginning of hike) and completing optional challenges earns you points. This is completely optional

Developed three more blisters in addition to the three I already had going into the hike. Nevertheless, it was a great hike! Thanks Dave and Sonya.

Another great hike with the group! I was disappointed that the vans weren't at the bailout point so that we could avoid "the most difficult three miles of my life," and I definitely missed the foot masseuse in the parking lot. Really though, a great day - sorry I'm missing tomorrow - have fun!

Really wanted to do a 20 miler before the knife. But will probably have to be around home for sick parents. I'll remove my name from RSVP to give someone else a spot. If a miracle happens I'll show up, but doesn't seem likely.

    April 3, 2014

    • Dave I.

Hi Steve, no worries. If you can make it then great. Take care of your parents, let us know if you need anything.

Just found out for sure I'm not going. My dad is in the hospital. So I guess I got a few things to deal with. And of course my surgery is Monday. I'll let you know how things go. I'll see you after my recovery. I'm signed up for the Philadelphia trip. At least I'll see you by then.

Hi Joe, We have a couple of good bail out points that will give you some options, based on how you feel. We can discuss before the hike. Dave

Bummer. Overnight guests from out of town coming to my house that weekend. Thankfully there will be five more. I will miss you guys!

I guess it would be inappropriate to drag your house guests up the side of a mountain. :-) lol

      Hope to see you soon.

    Hey Gang,

Sonya and I crawled all over Neversink Mountain this weekend. The trails are in great shape, much better than I expected after this winter.

All those “ups” were a bit of a kick in the butt. It seems that Sonya’s great cooking and copious amounts of Yuengling don't make the best winter training routine. Oh well, time to knock the rust off and start preparing for the Black Forest Trail in the fall.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the 5th.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave and Sonya,
I set up my hernia operation for April 7th. Cool! That means I can do this hike! Nothing like hiking 20 miles before going under the knife! This way I can go under in good shape. My surgeon said it should be only 4 weeks before I can resume normal activity (maybe not 20 miles - but normal activity ) Hopefully he is right. See you April 5th. I'll be bringing my friend Marcy along.

    March 10, 2014

  • Steve

Hi Dave and Sonya, for now I will keep my RSVP a yes. The other day I went to the Doctor and got the news I need a Hernia operation. I want to get it done as soon as possible so I can be recovered for May and after. I'll know on Thur more details when I see the Surgeon. I'll attend unless I'm cut into before April 5th. I will let you know what I find out.

    February 23, 2014

    • Dave I.

Hi Steve, sorry to hear that. Hope everything goes well. Please keep Sonya and I updated.

      February 24, 2014

    • Steve

Will do. And actually, I will be seeing you Sunday at Hopewell!

      February 24, 2014

  • Michael

Sorry to hear about the cancellation, I was looking forward to this. I'll keep my RSVP as a "yes" for the time being, though travel plans may force me to change it.

Sorry I missed today's hikes, sounds as if it was great!

    February 23, 2014

  • Dave I.

    Hi Everyone,

Sonya and I went to Neversink yesterday to check out the trail conditions. Unfortunately, the conditions are not conducive to running to the Assault on Neversink Mtn hike on March 1st. There are some locations where the snow is still more than a foot deep. We are rescheduling this hike for April 5th, please check your calendar and adjust your RSVP if necessary.

    My apologies,
    Dave
