Learn to Race Dragon Boats

Why spend all your time on tae kwon do, kick-boxing and jujitsu when you could be outdoors, getting a great workout while soaking up some vitamin D and meeting lots of new people? Dragon boat racing isn't for wimps or wallflowers! it's a challenging team sport that's really taking hold in the Bay Area and beyond.

Find out what dragon boat racing is all about by attending a free introductory session at one of our 90-minute practices or at a monthly New Paddler Clinic. We'll provide the boats, equipment, coaching and camaraderie for active adults who want to get in on the 2013 racing season. Experience not necessary.

Practices are on Saturdays from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. and on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Intensive New Paddler Clinics are from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays, April 14, May 12, June 16 and July 14. New paddlers should arrive a few minutes early for orientation and outfitting. If the weather looks if-fy call[masked] for a status update.

There is occasional splashing so dress accordingly. We look forward to seeing you soon.

I am a newcomer and will bring a friend, what type of clothing would be recommended to wear. And should I bring moeny to cover a club fee? Thanks in advance! Looking forward to meeting you all!

Hello, and welcome to the Alameda DragonFlyers Meetup group. We're looking forward to meeting you and your friend, but unfortunately our boats are already full for tomorrow and I didn't get the announcement onto Team Snap early enough. Very sorry about that. Can you arrange to come to practice next Wednesday, May 1 or Saturday, May 4? That is far enough in advance that I can reserve seats for you right now. Also, we're having a New Paddler Clinic on Sunday, May 12 from 1-4 p.m. It would be an excellent way for you to get an introduction and some concentrated coaching to get up to speed quickly. All the above times are listed on Meetup or you can email me back directly. I'm really sorry about tomorrow, but hope to see you another time soon.

In answer to you other questions, when you do come you should wear clothing in layers appropriate to the weather. Jeans and/or sweatshirt fabric aren't very comfortable on the water so I'd stay away from those. Bring a bottle of water and a hat if your sensitive to the sun. Your first 3 practices are free. After that, we ask you to join our organization (CDBA/ADF) which has a $150 annual membership fee. The dues cover the equipment, insurance and club operations. Race fees are separate and are usually about $25 for a one-day race and $75 for a two-day race.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
