We are meeting Saturday (tomorrow) morning, March 15 at 7:30 and leaving at 7:45ish barring weather. We will(~100 miles each way) take in some beautiful scenery and moderately difficult mountain bike ride approximately 9 miles up and back adjacent to the El Malpais National Monument near Grants, NM. Call Horacio (I also go by Sam) at[masked] if you have any questions.
This might not be the right ride if it is your first time on a mountain bike. Skill level is beginner to beginner/intermediate with moderate, intermittent climbs but regardless.. if you are up for it no one gets left behind. Trail is double track (4wd road) departing from the El Calderone parking lot (bathrooms, parking, picnic tables) which is approximately 30 miles south of Grants, NM on state road 53 (south of McDonalds) Ride will take 3-4 hours at a leisurely pace. Great place to take your lunch, go for a bike ride and possibly see deer, elk, turkey and black bears. (I have seen them all at one time or another)
I can take 1 or 2 passengers in my pickup including bikes but better to car pool because of the distance.
If you do go, please remember to bring water (camelback works best) but at least a couple of water bottles. Also dry clothing change in case it is wet. Also powerbar, or some type of energy food. Something for lunch not a bad idea.
Plan is to gather at 1909 Carlisle (my office) and leave from there. Mitigating factors might be weather related (not that I am expecting much rain or snow).
