About The Alexandria Walking Meetup Group

Do you enjoy walking? Join us for a walk and get some exercise while making new friends. Find a new walking buddy or simply enjoy the company and the scenery. Most walks are in the 4 to 9 mile range and can be classified as easy or moderate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a hike and a walk?
In elaborate scientific terms, a walk is a mostly flat trail with an often (but not always) paved surface (think Mount Vernon Trail or C&O Canal Towpath). A hike is usually in the woods along a dirt trail with exposed tree roots and may or may not involve elevation change (think Mason Neck State Park or Shenandoah National Park). I try to be very specific in the details of the event as to what trail conditions to expect.

Are dogs allowed on walks?
Dogs are welcome on walks provided they are allowed in the park or area that we will be walking and that you follow park guidelines. There are places that we occasionally will walk that do not allow dogs (usually wildlife preserves) so please check the park website before bringing your furry friend.

Is the pace fast, slow, moderate?
We are recreational walkers... if you are in decent shape and used to walking a few miles or a couple hours at a time you should have no trouble keeping up with the group. I do try to make sure that the group doesn't get too spread out.

What do I do if I want to join an event but it is full?
RSVP "No" to the event with "waitlist" in your comment and if I see a spot open up I will try to grab it for you. Your best bet, however, is to check back periodically to see if a spot has opened up. Spaces often become available during the final 24 hours before the start of the event.

Do you walk in the winter?
Walks are conducted all year long. Unless there's thunder/lightning, pouring down rain, poor road conditions, the temperature is below freezing, or a hurricane or snowstorm is about to strike, the walk will proceed as scheduled. In the event that a walk is canceled, an email will be sent out to those who RSVP'd at least two hours prior to the start of the walk. A message will also be posted on this site.

How do I make a suggestion for a walk?
Post your idea to the message board.
