Check out the waterfront at Jones Point Park

Rain, rain, rain! Tropical Storm Andrea is moving through over the next few days, bringing 2-4 inches of rain through next Tuesday. But there's supposed to be a brief peek of sun on Sunday, so let's stay on the pavement and snoop along the waterfront in Old Town to see what's happening.

The route: From the old ship’s rudder under Wilson Bridge we'll walk south to Mount Vernon Trail and follow the trail east along the waterfront to Jones Point Lighthouse. From the lighthouse, we'll continue along the trail through the woods, cross back under Wilson Bridge, and walk north along Old Town Alexandria waterfront through the parks - Ford’s Landing, Shipyard, Waterfront, King Street, Founder's, Oranoco Bay, Rivergate City, and Tidelock - before turning back in North Old Town and returning south along Royal Street to our starting point. (We'll take a brief detour west to Royal Street along our way north so we can walk through the Wilkes Street Tunnel - you just have to do the tunnel!)

The walk is a loop/circuit of 5 miles and should take about two hours at a moderate pace. (This is longer than our last visit to the waterfront in April, and we'll maintain pace throughout.) The surface is a mix of fine gravel and paved sidewalks.

Where to meet: We'll meet at the old ship’s rudder under Wilson Bridge, just south of the parking lot in Jones Point Park, GPS =[masked],[masked]

How to get there: The park entrance is at the south end of South Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria. From Highway 1 (either direction), take Franklin Street east to Royal Street, turn right and drive south 3 blocks until the street ends in front of Wilson Bridge. The park entrance is on your left. The street address is 100 Jones Point Drive, Alexandria, VA 22314.

What to bring: Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired. An umbrella and a change of shoes and socks for after the walk is probably a good idea, in case of showers and puddles. Please remember, this is a kid-free zone, no one under 18 please.

Administrative stuff: There are restrooms and water fountains at Jones Point Park and at the Torpedo Factory along the route. Parking at Jones Point Park is free and there is room for around 100 cars. The park closes at dark.

Sorry guys, I guess I missed the place. My gps took me there or at least to the address, but I didn't see a park or even an entrance.
Next time I guess but I just realized I could have taken the metro. It is not that far from the station. Bummer ! I was already ready and packed !
