***Sorry Super Troopers. We'll have to reschedule this walk for a later date because our furry friend, Mr. Groundhog, saw his shadow (six more weeks of winter!). How does Feb. 27th sound to you? Ok, see you then. Hopefully it doesn't snow and the trails are walkable.... Hey Super Troopers!!! As my great hero, Don Juan once asked: What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same: only love. So to all the lovely and beautiful ladies of The Alexandria Walking Group, as your loving and favorite assistant organizer, let me be the first to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day! ...I’ve been lucky through the years because Cupid has always been good to me and the girls have always loved my romantic heart (not to mention my boyish good-looks and big muscles). This year, I hope Cupid is good to you and sends a few arrows your way… For this walk, we’ll be going on a little romantic riverside side stroll along the Potomac River. The walk will begin at Gravelly Point (which is just north of Reagan National Airport along the northbound lanes of the GW Parkway), where we’ll head upriver along the Mt. Vernon Trail. Here we’ll be able to wave to our friends in D.C. while enjoying the river views of the District’s major landmarks. We’ll also visit the Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial which honors the sailors of the United States Navy and the United States Merchant Marine who died at sea during World War I. We’ll then turn west along Memorial Drive and walk along North Jefferson Davis Highway to the Marine Corps War Memorial (better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial), which is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the our country since 1775. Here we’ll turn back and return via Washington Boulevard where we’ll cross via footbridge to see the Columbia Island Marina and to stroll among the hundreds of white pine and dogwood trees of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove before returning to Gravelly Point. This will be the usual two-hour walk (6 miles). The trails are paved and completely flat. This will be perfect for our speed racers walkers-- Go Speed Racer Go!!! Where to meet: Gravelly Point parking lot off of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The parking lot is only accessible from the northbound lanes. If you’re coming from the southbound lanes, you can turn around at Reagan National Airport.
Don't Get Lost! You'll see me looking up at the planes taking off wishing they were whisking me and my sweetheart off to some warm and sunny Hawaiian beach. What to bring: yourself, water, comfy walking shoes, and cool sunglasses. As always, if you have questions, need a ride, going to be late, or just want to say hello, my number is (301) 712-5880. See you there! albert
