Colvin Run

Let's meet at historic Colvin Mill and take a walk along the Colvin Run Trail!

The route: From the parking lot at Colvin Mill, we’ll walk down the path past the mill and follow Colvin Mill Road SE to the intersection with VA-7/Leesburg Pike. After carefully crossing Leesburg Pike, we’ll walk along Carper’s Farm Way for a couple hundred feet and turn right to enter Colvin Run Trail. Colvin Run Trail leads upstream to Lake Fairfax Park, crossing Hunter’s Mill Road along the way. At Lake Fairfax Park we’ll walk around the lake, take a short break, and return downstream to Colvin Mill.

This is a modified out-and-back hike of 5.2 miles of smiles. There’s an abrupt descent from the parking lot into Colvin Run basin, a gradual ascent to Lake Fairfax Dam, a slight hill on the south side of the lake as we walk around, and lots of ups and downs along the way. The surface is gravel and dirt paths, and narrow with roots and rocks in a few areas.

Plan for about 2 hours, given time for a break at Lake Fairfax Park. (NB: if you’d like just a 3.8-mile walk, you can take a longer break at Lake Fairfax Park while the rest of the group walks around the lake, and rejoin the group for the walk back to Colvin Mill.) You may want to take a little time after the walk to check out the historic mill, too.

How to get there: From the I-495 Beltway, take the 47A-B/VA-7/Leesburg Pike/Falls Church exit and follow signs for 47A/VA-7 W/Leesburg Pike towards Tysons Corner. Continue west along VA-7 W/Leesburg Pike for 5.7 miles and turn right onto Colvin Run Road. The entrance to the parking lot will be on the left after the turn.

How to find us: We will meet in the Colvin Mill parking lot, GPS =[masked],[masked]

What to bring: Water, comfy shoes and your furry friend if desired (leashes, please), and a snack for lunch. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. As a reminder, this is a kid-free zone. That means no one under 18 is allowed, as our outings are based on the capabilities of our average adult participant.

Administrative stuff: There are restrooms and drinking fountains at Colvin Mill and Fairfax Park. Colvin Mill has a general store and Fairfax Park has snack and soft drink machines. Although the parking lot opens at dawn, the Colvin Mill facilities do not open until 11:00 am, so make a pit stop along the way if need be. A couple of nearby fast food places are marked on the Google map.

I feel like I repeat myself every time I fill out one of these reviews and say how great the day was, but again, it's true. Today was another incredible day of beautiful weather, gorgeous Virginia scenery and great friends...old and new!! Oh how I love spending my off-time with such wonderful, positive people!! Lunch and fat free frozen yogurt afterward capped a perfect day. Thanks so much, John!!

John - thanks for leading another great hike. I had not taken the trail in that direction from Colvin Mill. It was much more interesting and varied than going towards the river, even though we failed to pass any breweries.
