Let's take a walk along the Mount Vernon Trail!

Let's take a walk along the Mount Vernon Trail!

The route:

The first leg of the walk starts from our meetup point, past the entrance to Belle Haven Marina Picnic Area and along the Mount Vernon Trail to the turnaround just past Tulane Drive and return; not quite 3 miles. This portion is completely paved, with a couple of lengths of boardwalk. Bicyclists and moderate traffic noise from adjoining George Washington Parkway make this a good stretch to set a brisk pace and get your cardio on!

The second leg of the walk runs from the entrance to Belle Haven Marina - Picnic Area along the shoreline trail through Dyke Marsh to a boardwalk Potomac overlook and return; another 1.6 miles. Unlike the first leg, this is a quiet walk along a hard-packed dirt trail through a tidal marsh and swamp forest with pleasant views of sailboats on the Potomac against the backdrop of the Wilson Bridge and National Harbor.

The total walk is about 4.5 miles, fairly level throughout, and should take under 2 hours.

Check out the Google map here: http://tinyurl.com/lzdtplp

How to get there:

The entrance to Belle Haven Marina - Picnic Area is located along the George Washington Parkway, just south of the Belle Haven Country Club golf course. Coming from Old Town Alexandria, it is the first exit on the left after passing a Shell station south of the golf course. Coming from the south along George Washington Parkway, it is the first exit north of the intersection with Belle View Boulevard (1101 Belle View Boulevard, Belle Haven, VA). After taking the exit, make an immediate left and park in one of the two parking lots in the picnic area. Please do not park in the marina.

How to find us:

We will meet near the water fountain and restroom building in between the two picnic area parking lots.

What to bring:

Bring water and comfy walking shoes. Dogs are allowed (leashes, please). There is rain in the forecast, so consider tossing an umbrella in the car just in case. As a reminder, this is a kids-free zone, no one under 18 is allowed.

My ankle is sprained! Maybe I'll drive down there anyway and hang out at the picnic area. I love that area of the trail.

Great start to the weekend! Thanks, John. Next Sat., I'll be crossing the SF Golden Gate Bridge in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer to do the 1st of 2 days of 13.1 miles. I appreciate the trails you've introduced me to locally; they've made my training much more interesting.

The Belle Haven Park & Dyke Marsh are some of the happiest spots along the Mt. Vernon Trail. Great place to hang out, throw some frisbees, tumble all over on the grass, kayak off the marina. The Dyke Marsh is phenomenal too. Quite scenic as you look across the river to the National Harbor. Watch out for wild turkeys; Monarch butterflies & blue dragonflies everywhere, and deep-colored wildflowers by the boardwalk :D! Don't let the caterpillar sacs on the trees alarm you (look like spider webs). AND if you guys are still up for more walking, going mid-way across the Wilson Bridge to see Old Town Alexandria's marina from up top, and catch a glimpse of the Washington Monument & Capitol Dome at the distant horizon as planes landing at Reagan almost touch your head...captivating experience.

A couple of times a year, I walk to Mount Vernon from where I live or from Belle Haven... This won't be that far... Dyke Marsh is always lovely; maybe we'll see the eagles? cheers, sky
