Mozambique

Monday's forecasted flavor at Dairy Godmother is Mozambique (cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves), so let's enjoy an evening stroll in Del Ray!

The route: Starting from outside the Dairy Godmother at 2310 Mount Vernon Ave, we'll walk south to Del Ray Ave, turn right, and walk 2 blocks west to Commonwealth Ave. At Commonwealth Ave we'll turn left and walk south 5 1/2 blocks south to Mason Ave, where we'll turn left again. From there we'll follow Mason Ave east until it ends at the Alexandria YMCA, where we'll turn left and walk north along the sidewalk adjacent to Simpson Stadium Park, continuing on it along Leslie Ave. At Howell Ave we'll turn right and walk a block east to La Grand Ave. At La Grand Ave we'll turn left, and follow it north until it ends at E Randolph Ave. At Randolph Ave we'll turn left and follow it northwest and west back to Mount Vernon Ave, where we'll turn left and walk along Mount Vernon back to our starting point.

The walk is modified from our usual walk through Mount Jefferson Park and follows only paved paths. It's still about 2 miles and should take about 40 minutes.

A Google map of the route is here: http://tinyurl.com/q5f5gun

Where to meet: 2310 Mount Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301. We'll assemble on the sidewalk outside the Dairy Godmother and try to depart by 7:00. Autumn is fast approaching, so the sun is setting earlier each week. Monday it's 7:04, 17 minutes earlier than our last visit on 12 September.

How to get there: See the directions at the Dairy Godmother website, http://www.thedairygodmother.com/directions/

What to bring: Water, comfy shoes and your furry friend if desired. A light jacket might be nice for after the walk. A flashlight may also be a handy fashion accessory, but there are streetlights throughout so it's probably unnecessary. I'll have one just in case.

Before and after the walk: Get there early to grab a custard to enjoy along the way. Or get one after - it's open until 10:00. There's several local spots along Mount Vernon worth checking out for a bite of supper after; we've ambushed Thai Peppers with a dozen folks in the past with no problems. Last time we went to Los Tios, which was good also.

Sigh, looking like the maybe is a no based upon the desk clearing that still needs to happen before days end. Enjoy, and hopefully I'll catch the next flavor!!

Hi! I am new to the area and this is my first activity with the group. Is there parking available in this area?

    September 23, 2013

    • John M

Sure, Mount Vernon Ave itself is a little dicey, but there's plenty of parallel parking on the side streets.

Hey, John, would love to do this hike, but if we start late we'll still be on the trail after dark (USNO says civil twilight ends at 7:30). I've a problem with depth perception, and worry about tripping on roots in the dark, even with a flashlight.

If there's a late start, how about an alternate route to get onto the trail faster and do side-street walking later? Perhaps something like this:

-- South on Mt Vernon Ave
-- Left (east) on Del Ray Ave
-- Continue east on Mt Ida Ave
-- At Del Ray Animal Hospital, left (northwest) on Mt Jefferson Park Trail
-- After Raymond Ave, continue northwest toward Hume Ave
-- Left (west) on Hume Ave
-- Right (south) on Mt Vernon Ave
-- Right (west) on Oxford Ave
-- Left (south) on Clyde Ave
-- Left (east) on Bellefonte Ave
-- Left (north) on Mt Vernon Ave

Google-Maps distance is about the same, but would probably get us off the trail 10 minutes earlier.

    Just a thought.

Last time we visited I changed the route at the last minute to avoid Mount Jefferson Park altogether, since it was rainy that evening. The park might still be soggy from yesterday's rain, so we'll use that route again, and I revised the description to match. I'm pretty sure it had streetlights throughout.

Unfortunately, I'm really more of a maybe....will depend on whether I get out of work in time...but absolutely worth a try!!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
