Old Town Walkabout

"Occasional drizzle?" That shouldn't get in the way of a morning walk! Let's meet by the King Street Metro Station and check out what's going on in Old Town.

The route: From the bike rack across Diagonal Road from King Street Station parking lot, we’ll walk southeast past the statue of the Edmondson Sisters to Duke Street, east for a block, and then south along Hooff’s Run to the north boundary of Alexandria National Cemetery at Jamieson Avenue. From there we’ll work our way east through Old Town to the waterfront, passing the site of the old O&A Railroad Roundhouse and going through Wilkes Street Tunnel (of course) along the way. From there we’ll walk upstream along the Potomac waterfront parks to Tidelock Park, where we’ll turn back south along the Mount Vernon Trail and Fairfax Street to King Street, for a break by the fountain by the Town Hall and the Ramsay House. From there it’s back west along King Street all the way to our starting point, with an eye out for possible lunch spots along our way.

The walk is 5 miles of smiles and should take about 2 hours. The surface is paved  throughout and fairly level.

A Google map of the route is here: http://tinyurl.com/km8bjm2

How to get there:

• Metro: King Street Station is on the Blue and Yellow Lines.

• Driving: From I-395, take VA-7 / King Street east about 2.8 miles. Take the first right after passing under the railroad (Daingerfield Street), and an immediate right onto Diagonal Road. From US-1 / Richmond Highway, follow King Street west 0.5 miles, take a sharp left onto Daingerfield, and the first right onto Diagonal Road. There's free Saturday parallel parking in the area, especially along streets a block north of King Street and beyond.

What to bring: Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired (leashes, please). An umbrella may be handy for those occasional drizzles. You might toss a change of shoes and socks in the car for afterwards, in case you step in some puddles.

Administrative stuff: There are restrooms and drinking fountains at the Torpedo Factory and the Ramsay House (Alexandria Visitor Center) along our way. Before the walk, there’s a Starbuck’s northeast of the station for a beverage and a pit stop. After the walk, Joe Theismann's is handy for lunch if we don't spot something else along the way.

Still no word on National Park openings, so I think it was scrubbed. No worries - there will be a hike posted for Saturday!

If it's going to be a bad hair day anyway, might as well enjoy it.

Sounds like an interesting walk, but I'm registered for two 5K races this weekend. My feet would probably get a little grumpy if I add another 5+ miles [g], so I'll have to pass. Hope you all have fun (and none of us gets drenched by rain).
